SoftBank to Invest $500 Million in OpenAI Amidst Restructuring Plans

Tokyo - Japanese telecom giant SoftBank has committed to a $500 million investment in OpenAI as part of the artificial intelligence (AI) startup's ambitious $6.5 billion funding round, according to a report by The Information. OpenAI, renowned for its cutting-edge AI technologies like ChatGPT, aims to increase its market valuation to $150 billion through this funding drive.

While SoftBank has declined to comment on the investment, and OpenAI has yet to respond publicly, the significant influx of capital is anticipated to bolster OpenAI's ambitious growth plans. The Vision Fund's investment marks a pivotal moment for the Japanese conglomerate, as this is its first foray into the Sam Altman-led AI company.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that OpenAI is seeking $6.5 billion in funding through convertible notes, instruments which can be exchanged for shares in the company at a later date. This initiative comes along with the startup’s plans to restructure its core business model. Currently operated as a non-profit with a capped-profit model, OpenAI is contemplating a transition into a for-profit entity that would no longer be governed by its non-profit board. This restructuring is expected to appeal to investors who have shown concerns over the profit cap.

Notably, tech giant Apple, which was initially in talks to participate in the funding round, has since withdrawn its interest, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. In contrast, Microsoft, a leading investor in OpenAI, remains involved, strengthening its strategic edge in AI technologies.

This investment signals SoftBank's renewed focus on AI, aligning with CEO Masayoshi Son's vision for leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive future human progress. Son has been vocal about his interest in AI, demonstrating his personal commitment by engaging in dialogues with Sam Altman and even incorporating AI tools, such as ChatGPT, into his daily routine.

In addition to investing in OpenAI, SoftBank has other AI-focused initiatives underway. These include plans for Arm, the chip-design firm it controls, to unveil AI-centric semiconductor designs next year. Furthermore, SoftBank has acquired Graphcore, a British AI chip manufacturer, and made significant investments in companies like SambaNova, which develops software and hardware for AI applications, and TravelPerk, which integrates AI into travel booking services.

Moreover, SoftBank has been active in advancing autonomous vehicle technology. It has organised auto industry players around leveraging AI for autonomous driving and led a $1 billion investment in Wayve, a British startup specialising in autonomous vehicle technology.

In another significant move within the AI sector, chipmaker Cerebras has filed for an initial public offering (IPO), aiming to challenge Nvidia's dominance as a primary supplier for AI applications.

As OpenAI advances its fundraising and structural transformation, the investment from SoftBank is poised to be a critical factor in shaping the future of the AI industry. The ongoing developments signify a substantial shift in AI applications across various sectors, driving intense competition for market leadership.

With SoftBank prepared to invest an estimated $9 billion annually in AI ventures, this strategic emphasis underlines the company's commitment to technologising its investment portfolio and influencing the global AI landscape.
