UK Financial Institutions Double Investment in AI: Lloyds Bank Survey

The number of UK financial institutions investing in artificial intelligence (AI) has remarkably doubled within a year, as revealed by the ninth annual Financial Institutions Sentiment Survey conducted by Lloyds Bank. The survey results disclosed that almost two-thirds (63%) of these institutions are now investing in AI, a dramatic increase from just one-third (32%) in 2023.

This comprehensive survey included responses from over 100 senior decision-makers encompassing banks, wealth and asset managers, insurers, and financial sponsors. The insights gathered underscore the growing importance placed on AI, with 81% of financial institutions considering it a significant business opportunity—a considerable jump from 56% in the previous year.

Highlighting the proactive stance towards AI integration, the survey indicated that nearly half (46%) of these institutions have already established dedicated teams focussed on exploring AI use cases. Additionally, two-fifths (39%) have entered into partnerships with firms possessing AI capabilities, and 15% have collaborated with specialists in the AI field.

The survey identified three key areas where financial institutions are realising and expecting benefits from AI investment:

  1. Improved Productivity: A substantial 62% of institutions view AI as a productivity-enhancing opportunity, with 32% already noticing tangible improvements.

  2. Competitive Advantage: AI is seen as a competitive edge by 61% of respondents, of which 22% are currently benefitting from it.

  3. Greater Insight on Customers: Sixty-nine percent recognise AI's potential in offering deeper customer insights, with 18% already experiencing these advantages.

Despite these gains, many institutions have yet to fully realise the potential benefits of AI in other areas such as driving business growth and enhancing the client experience. However, the sentiment remains optimistic, with over two-thirds (69%) expressing confidence in their capability to implement AI and leverage its full potential.

Lisa Francis, Head of Institutional Coverage for Lloyds Bank Corporate & Institutional Banking, commented on the findings: "This year’s survey highlights a significant boost in AI investment among UK financial institutions, reflecting its elevation to a board-level priority. The focus has shifted from merely exploring AI to making practical investments and applications. As a result, many institutions are already experiencing the benefits, such as enhanced productivity, deeper customer insights, and a stronger competitive edge. While the full impact across all business areas is yet to be realised, this will evolve as institutions continue to innovate, test and learn."

Rohit Dhawan, Director of AI and Advanced Analytics at Lloyds Banking Group, added: "Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the financial landscape, and what we’re seeing is just the beginning. Growing investments from financial institutions and increasing partnerships in AI demonstrate a clear commitment to leveraging this technology. From automating complex processes to unlocking insights that improve decision-making, AI is enabling institutions to reimagine what’s possible. We are witnessing an exciting period of transformation, and it’s inspiring to consider the advancements that lie ahead for the sector."

As AI continues to gain traction, the financial sector in the UK is poised to navigate through this transformative period, exploring and capitalising on the myriad opportunities AI presents.
