Vertiv Expands High-Capacity Chiller Range for Enhanced Data Centre Cooling

London, UK [1 October, 2024] – Vertiv, a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has announced the extension of its Vertiv Liebert AFC chiller range. The new high-capacity models now offer up to 2.2 MW of cooling capacity within a single frame, marking a significant advancement in the industry's cooling capabilities.

These latest additions to the Vertiv Liebert AFC range are available across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). The increased capacity within a single-frame design is aimed at reducing the overall carbon footprint by necessitating fewer units for the same cooling capacity. This design innovation translates to decreased installation and maintenance time and costs for data centre operators, making the solution not only environmentally beneficial but also economically attractive.

The enhanced Liebert AFC models are high-density, outdoor, free cooling chillers that stand out for their hybrid operational capability. They are designed to meet the growing demands of data centres deploying artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) applications, which often utilise liquid cooling. Additionally, the new models adhere to the current regulatory standards of the European Union, ensuring compliance with existing environmental regulations.

Vertiv has crafted this chiller to be part of a comprehensive solution aimed at simplifying data centre deployment and management. When paired with other Vertiv products such as the Liebert PCW perimeter air handler system, Liebert XDU coolant distribution unit, Liebert CWA thermal wall system, and the Liebert iCOM CWM smart control, operators can achieve efficient and reliable cooling for colocation and cloud data centres.

George Hannah, Senior Global Director for Chilled Water Systems at Vertiv, highlighted the increasing demand for high-capacity cooling solutions in the AI and HPC sectors. "Our latest Liebert AFC low-GWP chillers reach up to 2.2 MW in a form factor that significantly reduces the time, cost, and complexity of deploying these systems," noted Hannah. "This solution supports our commitment to environmental responsibility and compliance with the latest regulatory standards."

The Vertiv Liebert AFC chillers offer up to 20 per cent lower annual energy consumption compared to traditional fixed screw solutions. The inclusion of an inverter-driven compressor helps reduce energy consumption, particularly during peak electrical demand, thereby freeing up more power for IT equipment. Innovative regulation algorithms provide precise control over fluid delivery temperatures to indoor units, enhancing cooling stability and reliability.

Furthermore, the unit is designed to operate with the eco-friendly refrigerant R1234ze HFO, aligning with the EU F-Gas Regulation 2024/573. This allows data centre owners to support pressing sustainability goals while complying with regulatory mandates.
