Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly transforming job roles by streamlining repetitive tasks, but accompanying this shift is a growing digital divide across different demographic groups in the workplace. A study released on 18 September by Cypher Learning, a platform focused on business and academic learning, highlights these trends, offering a comprehensive look at how AI is impacting employment dynamics.
The Cypher Learning survey encompassed the responses of 4,543 workers aged 18 and above from the United States, United Kingdom, and Mexico. It reveals that 63% of workers perceive AI technologies as having already altered the skill sets required for their positions. Furthermore, 52% anticipate that AI will fundamentally transform or significantly influence their roles within the next two years.
Despite these technological advancements, a portion of the workforce remains sceptical about AI’s integration into their daily work lives. Approximately 33% of the respondents expressed a desire for AI to be excluded from their workplaces entirely, citing concerns over job security and the obsolescence of current skills. This sentiment was reflected with 38% of workers anticipating the need for retraining as AI could render some roles redundant, and 45% expressing anxiety about future job prospects.
Nevertheless, a majority, 67% of the surveyed individuals, view AI as an ally in the workplace rather than an adversary. Many employees are recognising the advantages AI offers, particularly in reducing monotonous tasks. About 46% reported that AI simplifies their jobs, while 43% appreciated that AI liberates them from mundane administrative duties, allowing them to concentrate on high-value tasks.
The survey exposed a digital divide along demographic lines, with younger workers, men, and senior managers more likely to engage with AI technologies than women, older employees over 55, and those in manual or clerical positions. These latter groups reported feeling less positive about how technology is improving their work lives.
An additional concern highlighted in the study pertains to the need for clear AI guidelines within workplaces. A significant 69% of respondents indicated a lack of clear AI policies, which they believe is necessary as AI becomes more entrenched in business operations.
Looking towards future workforce requirements, the research shows a strong belief in the growing importance of AI proficiency. Around 73% of workers predict that AI skills will be crucial within the next five years, with 45% considering them essential to their roles. Despite this, only a small fraction, 25%, reported having received any formal training in AI applications.
Graham Glass, founder and CEO of Cypher Learning, commented on these findings by underscoring the necessity of fostering a workplace culture that emphasises continuous learning and the provision of relevant training. “Some workers may feel overwhelmed by technology when training is not delivered in a way that is relevant to them and their role,” Glass stated.
In summary, while AI is undeniably reshaping the landscape of employment, it is also highlighting disparities in technological adoption and skills acquisition. As AI technologies continue to evolve, addressing these divides and providing comprehensive training could play crucial roles in ensuring equitable benefits across all workforce demographics.
