AMD is set to elevate the performance standards of integrated GPUs with the introduction of its forthcoming Ryzen AI Max series. This new series is constructed on the groundbreaking Strix Halo architecture, which is anticipated to surpass the capabilities of the existing Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 models. The excitement comes from various leaks and discussions on tech forums, which have been buzzing with this information in recent weeks.

Leaked details suggest that the Ryzen AI Max lineup will be comprised of three distinct models. These models include the Ryzen AI Max 385, which features 8 CPU cores and 32 Compute Units (CUs) in its integrated Graphics Processing Unit (iGPU). Moving a step higher is the Ryzen AI Max 390, increasing the number of CPU cores to 12 and the CUs to 40. At the pinnacle of this series is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, boasting an impressive 16 cores and maintaining the 40 CUs setup.

One of the most striking revelations is that these integrated GPUs are expected to rival, if not outperform, standalone graphics cards such as the Radeon RX 7600 XT. This makes them highly suitable for a range of demanding activities, from gaming to artificial intelligence (AI) applications and professional workloads.

The architecture of these new chips is deeply rooted in the innovative Zen 5 cores and features the powerful RDNA 3.5 architecture for its graphics capabilities. This combination is expected to yield significant performance improvements, particularly in processing efficiency and graphics rendering.

Tech enthusiast David Huang, sharing insights on X (previously known as Twitter), indicated that the Strix Halo's RDNA3.5 was recently enhanced with detailed 192K Vector General Purpose Registers (VGPR) descriptions in LLVM's specification files. Furthermore, support for Strix Halo has been quietly incorporated into various ROCm libraries. Huang also pointed out notable enhancements in the computing bandwidth, suggesting that devices powered by these chips, such as laptops and potentially even tablets, could operate with supercomputer-like performance levels.

The Strix Halo architecture also incorporates robust memory support, including up to 128GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 32MB MALL (Memory Access Latency L3) cache, designed to excel in high-performance graphics and demanding computing tasks. Additionally, it can support video processing with up to 96GB of memory and features a 60 Trillion Operations Per Second (TOPS) Neural Processing Unit (NPU), amplifying its AI processing prowess.

The release of the Ryzen AI Max series is expected in the early part of next year, with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 anticipated to be the debut stage for these advanced Accelerated Processing Units (APUs).
