LG Electronics Announces Significant Investment in webOS Platform at Incheon Summit

In a significant development, LG Electronics has announced plans to invest over one trillion South Korean won, approximately £569 million, into its webOS platform and its associated businesses. This substantial investment was officially revealed during the webOS Summit 2024 held in Incheon, South Korea, under the theme 'Empowering webOS with AI'. The event also marked the 10th anniversary of webOS's inception on LG smart televisions.

The summit served as a platform for LG to unveil its strategic vision of evolving the AI-powered webOS ecosystem, integral to its broader ambition of transitioning from a traditional consumer electronics manufacturer to a 'smart life solutions company'. This shift encapsulates a broader strategy to enhance the role of AI in consumer technology.

During the event, LG Electronics showcased several innovative AI-driven services that the webOS platform offers. These services include advanced voice recognition for seamless login, personalised content recommendations driven by user preferences, and keyword suggestions, thereby improving user interaction and engagement with smart TVs.

LG's plans extend beyond consumer electronics, aiming to broaden the webOS ecosystem across various domains. This expansion aims to integrate webOS into automotive infotainment systems, digital signage, smart monitors, and gaming monitors, as well as projectors. Such a diversified application is intended to enhance the reach and functionality of webOS, making it a ubiquitous platform in different technological sectors.

The platform currently boasts over 4,000 applications, catering to a wide range of needs from entertainment to home fitness and education. LG's commitment to expanding this repertoire signals its dedication to meeting diverse consumer demands.

In the realm of gaming, LG Electronics is strengthening AI webOS as a sophisticated gaming platform. Collaborations with MediaTek and Razer are on the horizon, focusing on utilising Bluetooth ultra-low latency technology to bring input lag to a negligible 1ms when using a Bluetooth gaming controller, thus promising an enhanced cloud gaming experience.

A noteworthy introduction is the webOS Pay system, which facilitates the purchase of content and services directly through the AI webOS, adding another layer of convenience and functionality for users.

Additionally, LG Channels, the company's free ad-supported streaming service offering more than 3,800 channels across 29 countries, has been enriched with AI-based advertisement solutions. These solutions aim to deliver more impactful content recommendations aligned with user preferences.

Financially, the revenue generated from advertising and services associated with webOS is projected to surpass one trillion South Korean won this year, reflecting a remarkable fourfold increase since 2021. This growth underscores the successful expansion and monetisation strategies employed by LG in the digital marketplace.

Park Hyoung-sei, President of LG Home Entertainment Company, commented on the company's progress and future aspirations. He noted, “Our webOS platform business continues to go from strength to strength, based on close collaboration with our valued partners and an unrelenting focus on meeting the diverse needs of our customers. Celebrating a decade of webOS innovation, and now enriching customer’s everyday lives with AI webOS, LG is accelerating its transformation into a leading media and entertainment platform company.”

As LG Electronics continues to innovate and expand its webOS platform, the industry keenly watches how these advancements will shape the future of AI-driven consumer electronics and digital services.
