Microsoft Broadens AI Horizons with New Windows 11 Update and Office 2024 Release
Microsoft has made significant strides in integrating artificial intelligence into its software solutions, as demonstrated by recent announcements about new developments coming to Windows 11 and the release of Office 2024. The tech giant is keen to showcase the practical benefits of its AI-powered tools, embedded in the new Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11 features, while rolling out an updated version of its productivity suite for both Windows PCs and Macs.
AI Integration in Windows 11
The recent updates to Windows 11, version 24H2, introduce a range of AI capabilities designed to enhance user experience across Copilot+ PCs. Set to be accessible from manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft’s own Surface line, these computers boast processors from Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD. Microsoft stresses that there is significant customer demand for these AI-enhanced devices.
One of the cornerstone features of these updates is 'Recall,' a tool intended to help users find files and websites they've accessed by capturing screenshots of their activities and making them searchable. While the utility of Recall is clear, it has sparked controversy over potential privacy concerns. Microsoft assures that it incorporates security measures, requiring Windows Hello for access and filtering out sensitive data such as payment details. Initially, this feature will be available to Windows Insider participants for testing.
In addition to Recall, AI enhancements include the 'Click to do' feature, aimed at suggesting ways to utilise various apps and technologies for task completion, and improvements in the Photos app with the introduction of super resolution to enhance image quality. Notably, Windows Search will now employ AI to retrieve files based on user descriptions, enhancing the ease of navigation without needing an internet connection.
Windows Update's Key Utilities
Beyond AI functionalities, the 24H2 update introduces several other improvements like support for Wi-Fi 7, enhancements in Phone Link, and the development of File Explorer visualisation methods. New features also include improved support for advanced hearing aids, an energy saver mode to prolong battery life, and interface updates, such as clearer context menu labels and the ability to drag files in File Explorer.
However, the update is not without its technical challenges. Some users may encounter bugs, such as Blue Screen of Death errors on specific Intel systems, issues with Intel audio drivers, and unresponsive fingerprint sensors. These problems appear to be platform-specific, with Microsoft planning a phased rollout to address them progressively.
Office 2024 Release
Alongside the Windows updates, Microsoft has unveiled Office 2024 for both Windows PCs and Macs. This edition of Office, a standalone offering that doesn't require a Microsoft 365 subscription, brings several new features to users who haven't upgraded their Office suite since 2021. Office 2024 is available in two editions: Office Home 2024 for $150, and Office Home & Business 2024 for $250. The latter allows commercial use of its applications.
Key upgrades in Office 2024 include enhanced performance in Excel—even with multiple workbooks open—the ability to add images without altering formats, and a redesigned Outlook search feature with an accessibility checker. PowerPoint has seen updates with the ability to embed live camera feeds and add closed captions to multimedia content. Other improvements include a new default theme utilising fluent design principles and support for OpenDocument (ODF) 1.4.
The release marks an effort by Microsoft to cater to users who prefer traditional, standalone software packages over subscription models. Notably, Office 2024 lacks cloud storage integration, setting it apart from Microsoft 365's subscription offerings which include features like Publisher and Access for PC users.
As Microsoft embarks on this significant AI-focused evolution, both in operating systems and productivity tools, the company's dedication to leveraging AI to improve efficiency and functionality is evident. However, the reception of these changes, especially those like the controversial Recall feature, remains to be fully seen as they roll out more broadly in the coming months.
