United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) has introduced significant upgrades to its artificial intelligence-driven chatbot, ChatUWM, aimed at boosting efficiency and enhancing service delivery for mortgage brokers. The announcement was made on Wednesday, highlighting the chatbot’s expanded capabilities to process documents directly, calculate income instantly, and guide brokers in selecting the most appropriate products for their clients.
First launched in May 2024, ChatUWM serves as an AI-powered search engine optimized for providing immediate responses to client inquiries. It draws upon a vast information repository known as “The Source,” which encompasses guidelines, matrices, and a suite of lender tools. The rollout has attracted substantial engagement, with over 25,000 external users and more than 400,000 interactions since its introduction.
Chief Technology Officer Jason Bressler detailed the chatbot’s usage statistics, noting an average of nearly 3,000 prompts handled daily. With the latest updates, these numbers are expected to rise as brokers increasingly incorporate ChatUWM into their workflow. The expanded functionalities aim to make the platform an even more integral asset in broker-client interactions.
Among the enhancements, mortgage brokers can now upload PDF documents, such as appraisals or credit reports, to receive instant feedback and comprehensive analysis. The system is designed to read the documents, ask clarifying questions, and assist in identifying appropriate loan products tailored to the borrower's needs. For example, brokers can now upload W2s, self-employment income statements, and rental agreements, enabling the chatbot to swiftly calculate income and suggest fitting financial products.
Bressler illustrated the AI’s advanced capabilities by explaining a scenario where a broker might upload a credit report and a W2. The system then analyzes the documents, processes the data, prompts for any additional necessary information, and provides immediate recommendations on suitable loan products. In another instance, upon the upload of a 1040 document, the AI extracts, calculates, and returns the income details almost instantly, ensuring brokers understand how the figures were derived.
Furthermore, UWM's system facilitates the loan process by allowing the importation of a 3.4 file. ChatUWM can process this file through One-Click AUS, retrieve credit information, and seamlessly import it into EASE, UWM’s application framework.
Despite the technological advancements, Bressler indicated that exact quantifications of time savings are yet to be defined. However, he emphasized that the improvements would notably streamline processes, yielding significant efficiency gains for brokers and their clients. Crucially, UWM plans to maintain its practice of engaging with brokers via regular phone interactions, aiming to utilize the saved time for discussions centred on strategic business development and growth.
The announcement underscores UWM's commitment to leveraging technology to simplify mortgage processing, ultimately enhancing the accessibility and quality of services provided to mortgage brokers and their clients. The integration of these new features into ChatUWM is poised to transform how brokers interact with the system, offering them a powerful tool to manage loan processes more effectively.
