A heroic incident unfolded near Congleton in Cheshire as Police Constable Mark Jones, a dedicated member of the Cheshire Constabulary, saved a man's life following a dramatic car accident. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 28th September, on the A543, when a black Seat tragically veered off the road and collided with a tree. The collision left the vehicle severely damaged and emitting heavy smoke.
PC Jones, who was driving home after completing a night shift, came across the wreck and acted with selfless bravery. Despite the potential danger, he immediately turned his vehicle around to aid the situation. Upon reaching the scene, he found a 49-year-old man unresponsive in the driver's seat as smoke began to engulf the car.
With quick-thinking and disregard for his own safety, PC Jones forced his way into the vehicle, managing to pull the driver to safety some 50 feet away. Mere moments later, the car was engulfed in flames. Jones's courageous decision to perform a final check of the vehicle for any remaining passengers, despite the growing blaze, confirmed that no one else was trapped inside.
Following his intervention, the driver was transported to Leighton Hospital, where reports indicate he is expected to make a full recovery. PC Jones, who has served with the Cheshire Police for approximately nine years, reflected on the event, attributing his actions to the ingrained sense of duty fostered within the force.
Inspector Alex Cairns, from the Roads and Crime Unit, commended PC Jones's actions, stating, "The actions of PC Jones undoubtedly saved the male’s life and showed great courage and professionalism."
In a separate development concerning road safety in the region, Staffordshire is trialling an advanced AI camera technology designed to enhance road law enforcement. This technology aims to identify a range of driving offences without the need for direct police intervention. Offences such as failure to use a seatbelt correctly, or texting while driving, can now be detected through this system.
Motorists in the area could face significant fines and penalties if caught violating these regulations. For instance, an improper seatbelt could lead to a £100 fine, three penalty points, and a compulsory online education course. Moreover, failing to properly secure a child in a vehicle could result in a £500 fine.
Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, provided guidance on the correct use of seatbelts. He advised that seat adjustments should not compromise the belt’s effectiveness, and emphasised the correct positioning of both the lap and shoulder belts. Furthermore, Conway warned against storing hard objects in clothing that could cause injury during a collision.
