LinkedIn's Updated Service Agreement to Hold Users Accountable for AI-Generated Misinformation
LinkedIn, the professional networking platform owned by Microsoft, is set to implement a new Service Agreement in November 2024, taking a significant step to address the challenges associated with the rise of generative AI. The update stipulates that users will bear the responsibility for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of content produced by LinkedIn's AI tools that they choose to share.
Amidst the ever-growing integration of AI technologies in content creation, LinkedIn’s policy shift is designed to cover potential pitfalls by placing the burden of content verification on users. This follows a similar move by its parent company, Microsoft, which earlier revised its terms to clarify that AI tools are not intended as substitutes for professional advice and to highlight their inherent limitations.
The new user agreement specifies that while users can engage with features that automate content generation, such content might be inaccurate, incomplete, or unsuitable for their intended purposes. LinkedIn clarifies that this policy is particularly pertinent given the unpredictable nature of AI-generated content, which often cannot be guaranteed to be accurate or truthful.
One specific passage of the updated agreement underscores the necessity for users to verify and, if necessary, edit AI-generated content before redistribution to ensure compliance with LinkedIn’s Professional Community Policies, especially in avoiding the dissemination of misleading information.
Despite the foreseeable potential of generative AI models improving over time, particularly as LinkedIn utilises user data to refine these models, users are encouraged to opt out if they prefer not to contribute their data for this purpose. This data utilisation strategy, however, has not been without controversy, as concerns regarding GDPR compliance and privacy clash with the evolving landscape of AI technologies.
Impact of AI on Knowledge-Sharing Platforms: A PNAS Nexus Study
In related developments, a study led by Maria del Rio-Chanona and her colleagues, published in the PNAS Nexus journal, investigates the impact of AI models such as ChatGPT on traditional knowledge-sharing platforms like Reddit and Stack Overflow. This research highlights a substantial 25% decline in Stack Overflow's user activity following the launch of ChatGPT, underscoring a shift towards AI-generated responses over human-contributed content.
The study indicates that this decline was not replicated in other sites where ChatGPT's access is less prominent, suggesting that the shift in user preference was directly influenced by the AI tool’s availability. Del Rio-Chanona, affiliated with the Complexity Science Hub (CSH), emphasised the potential long-term implications of reduced human contributions to forums, which could result in a shortage of diverse and authentic data necessary to train AI models effectively.
Johannes Wachs, another CSH faculty member, articulated the irony in the current trend where AI tools, which rely on high-quality human-generated content for effective training, might eventually degrade as user-generated data dwindles. This is particularly evident in the drop in activity on posts related to popular programming languages such as Python and JavaScript, affecting users at various skill levels.
The findings suggest a significant impact on the traditional open web ecosystem, advocating for a balanced approach that supports both the advancement of AI technologies and the sustainability of shared public knowledge platforms.
