Zoom Video Communications Inc. is advancing its technology portfolio with the planned introduction of AI avatars capable of interacting on behalf of users. This novel feature allows individuals to create digital representations of themselves, designed to facilitate communication within teams by delivering brief messages in their stead.

To create an AI avatar, users are required to submit a video recording of themselves. Zoom's proprietary artificial intelligence will then analyse this video to construct an avatar that accurately emulates both the appearance and vocal qualities of the user. Once the avatar is created, users can draft messages they wish to send, which their avatar will then verbalise.

The AI avatar feature is slated for integration with Zoom’s existing Clips feature, which allows for the recording of short video updates intended for colleague engagement. According to Zoom, this service will be marketed as a custom AI Companion add-on priced at $12 per user each month. The company anticipates the feature will be ready for purchase in the first half of 2025, with selected functionalities expected to be available for preview in the upcoming months.

For current paid Zoom subscribers who choose not to purchase the add-on, there remains the option to create clips by using pre-existing AI avatars and voices.

The rollout of this technology comes amid heightened awareness around deepfake challenges. Zoom is proactively addressing these concerns by incorporating advanced security measures such as sophisticated authentication processes, watermarking technologies, and stringent usage policies. The aim is to mitigate the risks while leveraging the benefits of AI-driven communication.

Zoom's move places it among a growing number of tech companies exploring the realm of digital personification. Tavus, a generative AI startup, offers brands the capability to develop virtual personas for bespoke video advertising. Likewise, Microsoft Corporation has ventured into this technology, launching a service designed to create authentic-looking digital avatars. Both entities enforce strict regulations to safeguard against misuse, requiring consent from individuals whose likenesses are replicated.

In essence, Zoom's AI avatars represent the latest leap towards augmented digital communication solutions, providing a glimpse into a potentially transformative method of interacting remotely. The implementation of these avatars underscores the increasing intersection of artificial intelligence and personal identity in the tech landscape, inviting a dialogue about both the capabilities and responsibilities inherent in this innovation.
