AMD has officially announced plans to commence mass production of its new artificial intelligence (AI) chip, the Instinct MI325X, in the fourth quarter of 2024. The announcement was made during a recent company event held on a Thursday and is seen as AMD's strategic move to capture a significant portion of the AI chip market currently dominated by Nvidia's data centre graphics processors (GPUs).

The development of AI technologies such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT has accentuated the necessity for robust data centre capabilities, increasing the demand for efficient AI chips. Historically, Nvidia has secured a stronghold in this sector, capitalising on high demand with its GPUs and achieving substantial gross margins of approximately 75%. In contrast, AMD has remained the secondary player but aims to alter this competitive dynamic, foreseeing a market expansion worth $500 billion by 2028.

In her presentation at the event, AMD CEO Lisa Su acknowledged the escalating demand and investment in AI technology. "AI demand has actually continued to take off and actually exceed expectations. It’s clear that the rate of investment is continuing to grow everywhere," she commented.

The Instinct MI325X, priced at $14,813, is designed with nearly 200 processing cores, employing the Zen 5 architecture to deliver up to 37% speed improvements for complex AI data processing tasks. This chip is a step up from its predecessor, the MI300X, and sets a competitive stage given the impending launch of Nvidia's Blackwell chips, expected to be widely available early next year.

Despite not disclosing any new large-scale cloud or internet service customers during the announcement, AMD has previously revealed clients such as Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI as users of its AI GPUs. However, pricing details for the new chip remain undisclosed, as it is typically bundled with complete server setups.

Alongside its advancements in AI chip technology, AMD continues to strengthen its position in the broader semiconductor landscape. The company announced its new line of central processors (CPUs), the EPYC 5th Gen, which are available in various configurations to support diverse needs, from cost-effective 8-core chips priced at $527 to high-performance 192-core processors intended for supercomputers, also priced at $14,813. These CPUs are integral in managing data for AI workflows, with Su emphasising the symbiotic relationship between CPUs and GPUs in AI applications.

AMD has reported a surge in data centre sales, which more than doubled to $2.8 billion in the June quarter year-over-year, with AI chip sales comprising approximately $1 billion of that figure. While AMD claims about 34% of the data centre CPU market, it still trails behind Intel, a dominant force with its Xeon chip series.

On the stock market front, AMD’s shares experienced a 4% dip following the announcement, contrasting with a 1% rise in Nvidia’s stock. This comes amidst a backdrop where Nvidia's shares have surged by over 175% in 2024, while AMD's have only appreciated by 20%, highlighting the competitive pressures and market dynamics at play.

With its upcoming MI325X chip and other planned innovations, AMD is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in the burgeoning AI technology arena, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape against established players like Nvidia and Intel in the coming years.
