In a significant move within the defence technology sector, Anduril Industries has disclosed a strategic partnership with California-based startup Impulse Space, aimed at enhancing advanced in-space manoeuvring capabilities. Announced on 11 October, the collaboration is poised to pursue lucrative military and defence contracts, particularly targeting space missions that necessitate intricate orbital manoeuvres.
This partnership marks a pivotal step for both companies, as they aim to demonstrate "highly manoeuvrable space missions." These missions will concentrate on military undertakings that operate in nontraditional orbits, which demand higher levels of navigation sophistication and agility. This venture underlines the growing emphasis on in-space mobility as a crucial aspect of national security space missions, including space domain awareness and dynamic operations.
Impulse Space brings to the table its expertise in in-space transportation, notably through its development of orbital transfer vehicles. The Mira orbital transfer vehicle, a signature product of Impulse Space, will be a focal point in this new partnership. These transfer vehicles are designed to reposition satellites between different orbits, representing a significant technological capability in the ever-evolving landscape of space operations.
Anduril Industries will play a key role in this collaboration by integrating its Lattice AI-enabled software platform with Impulse's Mira vehicle. This integration will allow a single operator to control and manoeuvre multiple spacecraft simultaneously, enhancing operational efficiency. Anduril’s role as a mission systems integrator will involve equipping Impulse’s spacecraft with its own payloads, in addition to those from other partners. The demonstration of capabilities such as rendezvous and proximity operations, space domain awareness, and satellite defence is of particular interest to entities like the U.S. Space Force and various intelligence agencies.
Gokul Subramanian, Anduril's Senior Vice President of Space and Engineering, emphasized the importance of in-space mobility for a wide range of national security space missions. Mr. Subramanian acknowledged the partnership’s goals align with the strategic needs of dynamic space operations. Concurrently, Eric Romo, President and Chief Operating Officer of Impulse Space, indicated that the combined technological expertise of the two companies would enhance freedom of movement for national security missions, which require rapid and agile responses in space.
Further cementing its foothold in the defence and aerospace sector, Impulse Space has already secured a contract with the U.S. Space Force for two imminent space missions slated for 2026. This contract serves as a testament to the trust and anticipation that their technological contributions are garnering within defense circles.
Additionally, Anduril Industries has been making strides in integrating artificial intelligence with space operations. It recently formed another strategic partnership with satellite manufacturing startup Apex, continuing its strategy to infuse AI-driven technologies into spacecraft operations.
