In January of last year, German biotechnology firm BioNTech made a notable strategic acquisition by purchasing African artificial intelligence startup Instadeep for over $550 million. The deal, which was completed in July of the same year, marked the largest exit of its kind from Africa. Established a decade ago, Instadeep had already demonstrated its prowess in leveraging advanced machine learning for enterprise applications, gaining the attention of significant global investors and partners such as Google, Deutsche Bahn, and BioNTech itself.
Instadeep has developed AI systems capable of everything from GPU-accelerated insights to self-learning decision-making engines. Prior to the acquisition, the Tunis-born, Paris and London-headquartered startup had been deeply involved with BioNTech in creating an early COVID-19 variant detection system and with Google DeepMind on a locust outbreak prediction project in Africa. It also collaborated with Deutsche Bahn, Europe's largest rail operator, on automating railway scheduling.
Since merging with BioNTech, Instadeep has remained an independent entity, continuing to provide AI solutions both within and outside the biotech industry. Co-founder and CEO Karim Beguir highlighted that Instadeep has effectively aligned with BioNTech’s goal of using AI for developing vaccines and therapeutics targeted at cancer and infectious diseases. However, it has also maintained autonomous operations to innovate across different sectors.
A considerable focus post-acquisition has been on enhancing BioNTech’s biological AI capabilities. For instance, Instadeep's AI technologies have revolutionised histology by significantly speeding up the process of labelling tissues, traditionally done manually at BioNTech, through visual AI systems. Furthermore, the completion of the RiboMab project, an mRNA-encoded antibodies endeavour, has strengthened BioNTech’s therapeutic arsenal for combatting cancer.
Instadeep’s approach to data privacy is noteworthy, particularly given BioNTech's past involvement in a data breach affecting the European Medicines Agency. While BioNTech handles sensitive patient data, Instadeep trains its models on publicly accessible data, enhancing privacy while still enabling significant AI development.
Looking forward, Instadeep is breaking new ground with its Bayesian flow networks, a state-of-the-art AI model for proteins, which reportedly outperforms existing models. This model facilitates the analysis of complex protein functions, crucial for developing new therapies. The recent launch of a powerful near-exascale supercomputer further illustrates the firm’s advances under BioNTech’s ownership.
Despite its new biotech focus, Instadeep maintains significant operations in industrial optimization. It continues its long-term collaboration with Deutsche Bahn and is working with Fraport to enhance airport operations using AI. The launch of its DeepPCB product in San Francisco underscores its commitment to pushing boundaries in AI applications beyond biotech.
Instadeep's recent organisational growth includes a new office in Kigali, focusing on geospatial intelligence to preempt locust breeding in Africa. This work, utilising satellite imaging, is a prime example of AI’s potential in addressing global challenges like food security, especially in regions affected by climate change.
Having grown to over 400 employees worldwide, Instadeep remains a testament to the integration of advanced AI into diverse sectors. While continuing to support BioNTech’s mission in biopharma, its independence ensures the ongoing development of innovative AI solutions across industries, fueled by a shared vision and a commitment to technological advancement.
