In a transformative move, serial entrepreneur Brian O’Kelley is reshaping the landscape of digital advertising with his latest venture, Scope3. This change is driven by the integration of AI and a focus on reducing carbon footprints within digital advertising ecosystems. Known for his monumental success with ad platform AppNexus, which he sold to AT&T for an impressive $1.6 billion, O’Kelley is now journeying back into the advertising sector, but with a fresh, environmentally focused perspective.

O’Kelley’s journey towards environmental consciousness began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he was engaged in a yearlong supply chain management course through MIT. An unexpected catalyst for his newfound direction was a lecture slide on the carbon footprint of a banana, which spurred an epiphany. At the time, O’Kelley was at the helm of a metal commodities trading platform committed to reducing carbon emissions from trading and transportation. However, he discovered that the predominant carbon emissions from metals such as copper and aluminium originated from the mining and smelting processes, leaving minimal room for change through optimisation alone.

Armed with this insight, O’Kelley decided to pivot back to the ephemeral yet impactful world of digital advertising. In 2021, he established Scope3, leveraging core supply chain tracking technologies to address the inefficiencies and emissions associated with digital ads. Recognising the flaws in digital advertising — where a substantial portion of spending goes to waste due to intermediaries, fraudulent activities, and poor display targeting — Scope3 aims to streamline the process. This, in turn, enhances advertiser efficiency and reduces energy consumption in data centres, thereby decreasing carbon emissions.

Despite the bustling nature of this venture, O’Kelley faced an unexpected challenge earlier this year: an unanticipated heart surgery. During his recovery, he seized the opportunity to delve into artificial intelligence (AI), a technology rapidly influencing sectors including digital advertising. This exploration led O’Kelley to the understanding that media and AI were converging, with AI not only generating ads and web content but also revolutionising search functions.

Seeing a unique opportunity at the intersection of AI and environmental tech, O’Kelley engaged in discussions with GV, a key investor in Scope3. Surprisingly uncovering that few companies were operating in this intersected space, O’Kelley secured a $25 million funding round led by GV to propel Scope3’s AI advancements. This investment will enable Scope3 to build and refine data models as they explore the synergy between economic efficiency and environmental responsibility in advertising.

With this financial bolstering, Scope3 is now focused on developing its AI capabilities alongside its existing digital ad footprint reduction strategies. O’Kelley anticipates that aligning economic cost with environmental impact will resonate with customers, offering them a compelling reason to engage with Scope3’s innovative solutions.

By merging environmental goals with cutting-edge AI, and supported by a strong financial foundation, Scope3 is poised to introduce substantial changes within the digital advertising sphere, propelling it towards a more sustainable future.
