At TOKEN2049 in Dubai on October 8, 2024, Ben Zhou, co-founder and CEO of Bybit, offered insights into the evolving landscape of crypto compliance and the innovative use of AI in the sector. TOKEN2049, esteemed as a leading global crypto event, welcomed over 30,000 attendees and brought together notable figures in the blockchain and crypto industry, including major exchanges like Bitget, BingX, Coin W, and KuCoin.
Zhou acknowledged the increasing regulatory demands facing cryptocurrency exchanges as they move towards mainstream acceptance. Highlighting this trend, he remarked, "Compliance is not cheap, but the penalties are more expensive," referring to the associated costs not just financially but also in terms of broader consequences for non-compliance.
Bybit, identified as the world's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, is undergoing significant adaptations in response to these regulatory challenges. Following a series of industry shifts, Bybit has moved towards standardising compliance measures for all transactions, regardless of size. This development follows a recognition of past industry pitfalls and a proactive approach to prevent future issues.
The operational overheads associated with these compliance measures have understandably increased. Bybit has leveraged third-party tools such as Chainalysis to enhance due diligence and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, despite the increased costs involved. Bybit's compliance team has grown to include over 50 risk experts working alongside advanced AI tools, supported by a diverse legal and compliance team.
Significantly, Zhou pointed out how the cryptocurrency industry is spearheading advancements in compliance practices. He illustrated how Bybit's systems can rapidly block users from sanctioned addresses, showcasing a new era of compliance that could redefine industry standards.
On the topic of AI, Zhou explained that Bybit focuses on user experience optimisation over traditional API usage, which can sometimes alienate retail users. Bybit utilises AI to automate and streamline mundane processes, thereby enhancing the usability of their platforms. This involves generating timely summaries that provide hard data and community feedback about cryptocurrencies, helping users conduct research more efficiently.
Zhou also commented on the significant growth prospects within the crypto industry, particularly in terms of financial inclusion. He cited the expansion of the TON ecosystem and play-to-earn games as catalysts drawing users from Africa, India, and Eastern Europe. This trend highlights the role of cryptocurrency in providing financial services to regions where traditional banking infrastructure may be lacking.
The panel, entitled “Exchanges at the Helm: Driving Crypto from Niche to Mainstream,” included other prominent panelists such as Gracy Chen from Bitget, Vivien Lin from BingX, Sonia Shaw from Coin W, and Alicia Kao from KuCoin. Moderated by Michael Casey, Chairman of the Decentralized AI Society, the discussion underscored the collective effort of exchanges to become frontrunners in driving the industry towards broader mainstream adoption.
Bybit, established in 2018 and now among the top three crypto exchanges globally by trading volume, boasts a user base of 50 million. It is famed for its professional platform, offering an ultra-fast matching engine and continuous customer service. Bybit also partners with Formula One's top team, Oracle Red Bull Racing, symbolising its impactful presence and ambitions beyond the crypto sector.
