ByteDance, the parent company of the globally renowned social media app TikTok, has unveiled its latest foray into the consumer electronics market with the introduction of its first earbuds, the Ola Friend buds. Priced at $170, these earbuds represent ByteDance's strategic move into hardware, echoing its ongoing expansion beyond software and digital content.
The Ola Friend earbuds are slated to hit the market exclusively in China initially. This launch capitalises on ByteDance's integration of its generative AI assistant, Doubao. Doubao has already established itself as a prominent player in the AI landscape of China, boasting 47 million monthly active users as of September. This achievement comes in the wake of ByteDance's sharpened focus on generative AI technologies following the significant impact of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which debuted in late 2022.
Designed with open-ear architecture, the Ola Friend earbuds offer a variety of functionalities. Notable among these is their capability to function as an audio tour guide during travel, as well as a tool for English language practice. These features are seamlessly accessible via the Doubao mobile application, enhancing user experience by leveraging the widespread use and familiarity of ByteDance's AI technology.
The earbuds come in a spectrum of four colours: purple, silver, black, and white, catering to diverse consumer preferences. ByteDance has initiated pre-orders, with the shipping date scheduled for October 17, marking a significant date for early adopters keen on exploring ByteDance's hardware offerings.
This release follows ByteDance's acquisition of Oladance earlier this year, a company specialising in wearable audio devices. This strategic acquisition underscores ByteDance's incremental steps in the hardware domain, complementing its earlier purchase of the VR hardware firm Pico. Earlier acquisitions include ByteDance's entry into hardware in 2019 with the purchase of Smartisan, a local smartphone brand. More recently, ByteDance added to its portfolio by releasing the latest VR headset model, the Pico 4 Ultra, in Europe and several Asian markets, subsequent to its initial launch in China in August.
The launch of the Ola Friend buds is a testament to ByteDance's growing ambition within the tech hardware sector, reflecting a convergence of software innovation and physical product development. As ByteDance continues to blend their extensive digital ecosystem with tangible products, the introduction of the Ola Friend earbuds serves as an indicator of the company's evolving market strategies.
