As artificial intelligence continues to transform the landscape of cybersecurity, both businesses and consumers are grappling with heightened concerns regarding data security and the potential exploitation of AI by cybercriminals. In the Asia-Pacific region, a recent survey commissioned by Cloudflare has shed light on the apprehensions among cybersecurity leaders and the evolving threat environment they face.

The comprehensive survey, which canvassed the opinions of 3,844 cybersecurity professionals across 14 Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia, China, India, Singapore, and South Korea, reveals a complex picture. A significant 50% of these leaders foresee AI being utilised to crack passwords or encryption codes. Meanwhile, 47% predict improvements in phishing and social engineering attacks due to AI advancements, and 44% anticipate enhanced Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Concerns also extend to privacy breaches and the creation of deepfakes, with 40% expecting AI to play a role in these areas.

This complex cyber environment, marked by budgetary constraints and transformative technological demands, has left many organisations feeling vulnerable. An overwhelming 86% of surveyed cybersecurity leaders believe that such complexity has heightened their vulnerability to cyberattacks. Alarmingly, 41% have experienced a data breach in the last year, and nearly half have faced at least ten such incidents.

The frequent nature of these breaches is also on the rise, with 76% of those affected noting an increase in occurrence, while 58% anticipate a further uptick in the next year. Additionally, 92% reported experiencing repercussions beyond the immediate breach, including regulatory actions, further data-driven attacks, and reputational harm.

Interestingly, despite the increased threat from AI, there is a sense of optimism among cybersecurity teams. While 87% of respondents acknowledge that AI has enabled more frequent or sophisticated cyberattacks, 83% believe they can ultimately outpace threat actors using AI. This optimism, however, contrasts starkly with the 28% who feel adequately prepared to handle an AI-enabled attack currently.

In response to this shifting threat landscape, organisations are actively modifying their operational strategies. A considerable 70% are changing their approach, focusing on governance, regulatory compliance, and vendor engagement. Furthermore, there is a significant move towards adopting AI-enabled security tools, with priorities including hiring generative AI analysts and investing in threat detection systems.

On the consumer front, fears are equally mounting over data security and the implications of AI. A separate study by data security firm Cohesity, conducted by Censuswide across the UK, US, and Australia, highlighted that 79% of consumers feel companies collect excessive personal or financial data. The study also found that 91% are concerned about AI complicating data security issues, with 83% of Australians, 64% of Brits, and 72% of Americans perceiving AI as a threat to data protection.

The survey highlights a notable demand for greater transparency and regulation in the use of AI, with the vast majority of consumers across all surveyed markets desiring informed consent before their data is utilised in AI models. Additionally, significant percentages of consumers want businesses to scrutinise the data management practices of third-party providers and to disclose whom their data is shared with.

Personal experiences with cyberattacks have further intensified consumer concerns. In the US, 75% of respondents reported personal impacts from cyberattacks, as did 62% of those in Australia. This pervasive apprehension is influencing consumer behaviour, with over 90% indicating they might cease transactions with businesses that fall prey to cyberattacks.

James Blake, Cohesity's global chief security strategist, notes that the "hunger for AI" has led some organisations to overlook crucial threat modelling and diligence regarding data exposure. Businesses are being urged to invest in robust data security and governance to maintain customer trust and cyber resilience.

As AI continues to redefine the boundaries of cybersecurity, both organisations and consumers are navigating this evolving landscape with cautious optimism and an acute awareness of the challenges ahead.
