Enbridge, a leading energy company, has announced a significant partnership with technology giant Microsoft to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. This collaboration aims to enhance safety measures, reduce emissions, and optimise assets within Enbridge’s extensive energy network.
With a history of AI integration spanning over five years, Enbridge now plans to further employ this technology to meet its operational and environmental targets. Key advancements under this initiative include the deployment of the Energy Optimizer tool. This AI-powered system is designed to deliver real-time insights to control centre operators, facilitating more efficient energy movement and thereby achieving cost savings and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. This is particularly vital in maintaining the safe and reliable transportation of liquid through Enbridge's pipelines.
Another critical component of the initiative is the refinement of right of way monitoring processes. Traditionally reliant on aerial surveillance to inspect pipelines for any potentially damaging activities or conditions, Enbridge now uses AI to enhance efficiency and accuracy in data review and issue detection. This advancement is expected to mitigate third-party damage risks more effectively.
Furthermore, the company's Integrity Engine employs intelligent automation to uphold pipeline integrity. AI technologies are utilised to pinpoint potential maintenance needs, allowing for an improvement in safety and operational efficiency. By leveraging workflow automation, data controls, and machine learning models, Enbridge aims to achieve heightened insights into asset maintenance, simplifying complex processes and ensuring asset health.
Bhushan Ivaturi, Enbridge's Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, highlighted the importance of these technological advancements. "Our long-term collaboration with Microsoft has enabled us to apply cutting-edge technology, which is helping to solve critical business problems and deliver powerful outcomes," Ivaturi stated. Emphasising the pivotal role of these technological investments, he noted their significance in addressing large-scale energy system challenges amid a transition towards reduced carbon emissions.
Enbridge embarked on a digital transformation journey in 2020, aiming to boost productivity and efficiency. Central to this transformation was the migration of over 80% of the company's workloads to Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform within two years. This migration not only enhanced Enbridge’s computing, network, and storage capabilities but also strengthened cybersecurity measures and reduced data centre emissions by minimising the physical facility footprint.
In an extension of its digital strategy, Enbridge recently introduced Microsoft 365 Copilot to nearly one-third of its workforce, providing access to Bing Enterprise and ChatENB, their internal chatbot powered by Azure's OpenAI Service.
Microsoft Canada’s Enterprise Commercial Multi-Industry Lead, Tom Kubik, expressed pride in the collaborative efforts, noting, "The Enbridge leadership team drove a cloud-first strategy, a big bet that opened the door to a broader opportunity that positions Enbridge today to take full advantage of AI."
Ivaturi added that Enbridge anticipates ongoing benefits from AI in realms such as data analytics, asset optimisation, and emissions reductions. Highlighting the company's commitment to a more connected and collaborative work environment, he affirmed, "At Enbridge, we are enabling the accessibility, sustainability, and security of energy through applied technology and innovation, and our collaboration with Microsoft will continue to play a pivotal role in that."
