Groundbreaking Empire AI Consortium Launched at University at Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. — In a significant stride towards harnessing artificial intelligence for public service, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has introduced the Empire AI Consortium at the University at Buffalo's Center for Computational Research. Launched on Friday, this pioneering initiative is anticipated to commence research activities in the autumn of this year.
This consortium marks a novel effort as an independent computing centre dedicated to solving critical issues that affect the state of New York and potentially the broader nation. Among its chief objectives are tackling pervasive societal dilemmas such as climate change, health disparities, and food insecurity. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to leverage AI's capabilities in addressing cybersecurity threats, driving economic development, and expediting drug discovery processes.
Governor Hochul emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, "Imagine what good can be done if you take this power and put it in academia, and attract the brightest people in the country to come to our state, to have access to this, to contemplate and imagine, innovate, and create solutions to society's problems that up until now have been unsolvable."
To manage the concerted efforts of the consortium, Dr. Robert J. Harrison from Stony Brook has been appointed as the interim executive director. He will steer the AI consortium through its initial research phase, guiding it towards achieving its ambitious goals.
Adding to the strategic oversight of this ground-breaking initiative is the Empire AI board of directors, featuring representatives from eminent educational institutions such as the State University of New York (SUNY), the City University of New York (CUNY), New York University (NYU), and Cornell University. This diversity of leadership aims to foster a rich collaborative environment critical for the consortium's success.
Tom Secunda, co-founder of Bloomberg LP, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to exponentially accelerate research processes. He noted, "Being able to look for cures and experiment 1,000 times faster will get us results 1,000 times faster, so it is really exciting, and it is really great to be able to start a year and a half early."
