Healthcare Innovator Joan LaRovere Pioneers AI Solutions for Global Health Challenges
Joan LaRovere's expansive career journey, encompassing roles as a doctor, non-profit co-founder, investor, start-up advisor, and educator, has taken her across continents and into the heart of complex global health challenges. As a specialist in paediatric cardiac intensive care, LaRovere's significant contributions extend beyond clinical medicine, as she now leverages data and technology to enhance healthcare delivery where it is most desperately needed.
LaRovere's impressive academic background laid the foundation for her diverse pursuits. She holds dual citizenship in the US and UK, having completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard University. She further advanced her education with a master's degree from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, before returning to the US for medical school. Her professional journey took a significant turn when she moved to the UK for a fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, eventually becoming the director of the paediatric intensive care unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital in 2008. Reflecting on her time at the Brompton, LaRovere acknowledges the institution’s investment in her professional and personal development.
During her maternity leave in 2002, LaRovere co-founded Virtue Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to delivering healthcare to underserved populations and employing data science to tackle global health issues. Her vision for reshaping healthcare delivery drew from her inclination towards understanding finance, market strategies, and product development—insights rooted in her upbringing and further nurtured by her business studies.
In 2011, she was asked to rejoin Boston Children’s Hospital, where, driven by a desire to further her knowledge in business and management, she negotiated to study for an Executive MBA (EMBA) at MIT Sloan School of Management. Starting in 2014, LaRovere found MIT’s focus on impactful ideas and practical application resonated with her ambition to create tangible benefits in healthcare.
A significant aspect of her EMBA experience was diving deep into data science and AI, fields she recognised were transforming healthcare into a data-centric business. At Virtue Foundation, LaRovere and her colleague, Dr. Ebby Elahi, an oculofacial surgeon at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, initiated a project employing data science and AI to efficiently identify healthcare needs in low-and middle-income countries. This project seeks to enable volunteer surgeons and doctors to make informed decisions regarding their deployment, maximising their impact.
This initiative has culminated in the development of an AI platform set to launch in early 2025. The platform will provide a comprehensive overview of the healthcare ecosystem in 72 countries, highlighting facilities, NGOs, and infrastructure such as population densities and road networks. By providing insights into "medical deserts"—areas lacking healthcare access—the tool aims to assist healthcare professionals in locating where their skills are most needed.
The free-to-use platform will initially be available to physicians and healthcare practitioners, facilitating searches by speciality or volunteer opportunities. LaRovere emphasises the collective endeavour involved in bringing the platform to life, bolstered by MIT's network, which fostered partnerships with companies like Databricks, DataRobot, and Carto.
In her concurrent role as associate chief medical officer for transformation at Boston Children’s Hospital, LaRovere applies her extensive knowledge in transforming patient care, from integrating AI into workflows to shaping future healthcare workforce initiatives. Her work continues to bridge the individual impact of clinical care with the broader goal of scalable healthcare solutions.
Complementing LaRovere's approach is Dr. William Brien, an orthopaedic surgeon who recently assumed the chief medical officer role for the Desert Care Network in California's Coachella Valley. Dr. Brien's focus on patient care, safety, and quality aligns with LaRovere's objectives. Having served in various leadership roles across notable medical institutions, his commitment extends to Desert Care Network's educational initiatives, crucial for fostering healthcare talent locally.
