In an event held at its Palo Alto headquarters last month, HP introduced the EliteBook X G1a, acclaimed as the most powerful commercial AI laptop currently available. The machine is equipped with a 55 TOPS NPU, a feat made possible by the integration of the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 375 processor. This processor is exclusive to HP, setting a new benchmark for AI capabilities in the commercial PC market, as other devices cap at 50 TOPS.
The EliteBook X G1a represents a notable shift in HP's product line, marking the transition from the previous EliteBook 1000 series to the new EliteBook X series. This move highlights HP’s commitment to enhancing AI functionality, distinguishing itself from other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who primarily depend on third-party software.
The specifications of the EliteBook X G1a underline its high-calibre design and functionality. It boasts a 14-inch display available in IPS or OLED options with resolutions up to 2880x1800. The device offers up to 64GB of DDR5-8000 RAM and supports storage of up to 2TB SSD. The EliteBook is powered by a 74.5Whr battery and comes with a 100W charger. Connectivity features include two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. While the device lacks cellular connectivity options, it supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
The laptop's construction also takes a notable leap in design with the usage of an aluminium body, offering a premium feel though slightly heavier, weighing in at 3.3 pounds. One of the standout features is its keyboard, sporting new 1.5mm keys which provide a balanced tactile experience without straying too far from its predecessors. The visual design is complemented by a two-tone aesthetic, pairing a light silver chassis with a dark grey keyboard, offering a sophisticated look.
A keen focus of the EliteBook X G1a is its advanced AI capabilities. Unlike its competitors, the laptop's features leverage HP’s in-house innovations, notably showcased through its AI Companion software. This tool aids users by allowing natural language inputs for performance settings and provides efficient document analysis—ideal for professionals dealing with extensive data and press kits.
In addition, HP has enhanced the video communication experience with the Poly Camera Pro, enhancing its already reputable webcam technology. This feature not only offers standard background blurring but incorporates adjustable settings for brightness, saturation, and contrast, taking advantage of the NPU to enhance visual quality while conserving power.
Despite prior scepticism towards AI-integrated PCs, HP's approach suggests practical applications with features designed to improve user productivity and overall experience. The EliteBook X G1a stands out as a testament to HP’s foresight in integrating meaningful AI functionalities in their devices.
While the precise pricing details remain under wraps, the HP EliteBook X G1a is slated for a December release, adding anticipation to the market for those seeking advanced AI capabilities in a business laptop.
