Huawei has unveiled the seventh generation of its OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage array, which the company asserts is tailored to meet the advanced data storage needs of enterprises in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). This latest development was announced by Huawei, highlighting its focus on providing sophisticated solutions for mission-critical applications that require robust performance and resilience, particularly for managing complex AI workloads.
The OceanStor Dorado family has been strategically segmented into three product categories. At the high end are the 8000 and 18000 series, the latter reportedly offering three times the performance of its predecessor. The 5000 and 6000 models cater to mid-range needs, while the 3000 series serves as the entry-level offering. Huawei's emphasis is on enhancing performance and ensuring reliability across this new suite of products.
One of the standout features of this seventh generation is its use of a Data Processing Unit (DPU)-based SmartNIC. This innovation is designed to separate data and control flows, thereby mitigating processor bottlenecks. Additionally, the newly refined FLASHLINK disc controller-DPU coordination algorithm enables the system to achieve over 100 million input/output operations per second (IOPS) and maintain very low latency at just 0.03 milliseconds.
The OceanStor Dorado's resilience is bolstered by its SmartMatrix full-mesh architecture, which permits the storage system to continue operating seamlessly even if seven out of eight controller enclosures fail. This ensures the system's reliability at a rate of 99.99999%. Furthermore, it promises a 99.99% success rate in detecting ransomware and guarantees complete data availability post-recovery through its intelligent snapshot feature.
Furthermore, the OceanStor Dorado line boasts a native unified storage architecture, making it versatile for a multitude of applications, ranging from databases to file systems and container storage solutions. Its Data Management Engine (DME) leverages AI to significantly boost operational and maintenance efficiency, reportedly improving it by five times through proactive anomaly detection and resolution.
Huawei's data storage technology is presently utilised by an extensive customer base exceeding 26,000 globally, including 53 of the top 100 banking institutions, which underscores the company's significant impact across a variety of sectors on an international scale.
Addressing the broader context of these innovations, Yang Chaobin, Director of the Board and President of ICT Products & Solutions, acknowledged the ongoing challenges Huawei faces. During a keynote speech, he referenced the constraints imposed by American sanctions, which have impacted the company's operations. Yang indicated that there is a contingent of existing version 6 customers eager for the new version, despite these political limitations. The company is making strides to navigate these obstacles and reinforce its relationship with its clientele.
This latest release from Huawei comes amidst a backdrop of heightened demand for high-performance data storage solutions capable of supporting the burgeoning field of AI, marking a significant step forward for the company and its global enterprise offerings.
