A significant data breach has afflicted a prominent call centre service provider in the Middle East, resulting in a colossal loss of private customer information. According to cybersecurity researchers from Resecurity, the stolen data is being marketed on the dark web, revealing the vulnerability of digital platforms to cyber threats.
The data breach reportedly occurred at a major AI-powered cloud call centre located in Saudi Arabia, where hackers managed to infiltrate the management dashboard. Within, they accessed over 10 million conversations involving consumers, operators, and AI bots. These dialogues, as elaborated by the researchers, include sensitive personal information such as national ID documents. Such data is a goldmine for cybercriminals, who can extract, organise, and utilise the information to compile a robust and fresh database.
The breached data has surfaced on the notorious Breached forums, a platform where cybercriminals frequently trade in stolen information and resources. The seller of this data claims to offer a wide array of services: access to 1,000 enterprise customers, data from 1 million end users who engage with varied services such as banking and airline communications, and over 10 million chat messages. The offering also includes gigabytes of documents submitted by customers during conversations with AI assistants. Additionally, the package includes access to the call centre's admin panel and a VPN required for engineer-level entry.
This cache of information is highly sought after by threat actors, who can exploit it for several malicious activities. The detailed customer data is particularly useful for executing phishing attacks, identity theft, and sophisticated social engineering exploits. The seller describes the offering as invaluable for real-time social engineering, emphasising the utility of the big data acquired from the breach.
The asking price for this database on the dark web is $15,000, with accepted payment in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin or monero, which are favoured for their anonymity.
Resecurity's intervention led to the swift removal of the attackers from the call centre's system, potentially rendering any ongoing access offered by the hackers void. However, the damage incurred from the data theft persists, highlighting a significant lapse in data security.
This incident underscores the growing risks associated with digital information management and serves as a stark indication of the evolving capabilities of cybercriminals who exploit vulnerabilities in AI-driven platforms. The breach calls attention to the pressing need for reinforced cybersecurity measures within critical digital infrastructures.
