Meta Platforms Inc., the powerhouse behind social media giants Facebook and Instagram, is making strides in expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities globally. The company announced the introduction of its AI chatbot to Brazil, the UK, and four additional countries: Bolivia, Guatemala, Paraguay, and the Philippines. These developments form part of Meta’s broader ambition to extend its AI services across multiple nations over time, including in regions such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

The AI rollout marks the availability of Meta's AI assistant in the UK, a move delayed by initial regulatory challenges and product testing. Meanwhile, Meta's AI remains inaccessible in the European Union due to regulatory uncertainties. Known for its capabilities in generating text and images, the AI assistant is currently active in the US and Australia, in addition to these newly included countries.

UK users can engage with the Meta AI chatbot through Facebook and Instagram apps, or by purchasing a pair of Ray-Ban Meta frames, priced at £299, which feature a built-in voice assistant. Notably, though, the AI assistant's celebrity voice feature, which includes voices like those of Judi Dench and John Cena, will not be available in the UK.

Meta's AI assistants are designed to enhance user interaction through voice commands, now utilising celebrity voices. This innovation aims to create more engaging and personalised experiences, potentially increasing user engagement by making interactions more enjoyable and relatable. Aside from voice recognition, the assistant can process and interpret visual information, enabling new forms of social commerce such as identifying products from images uploaded by users.

The introduction of these AI innovations aligns with Meta’s launch of 'Meta Movie Gen' - a tool capable of generating customised video and audio content from text prompts. This new model builds on Meta’s earlier generative AI models and is said to equip users with greater control over their media content creation.

Internationally, Meta plans to expand its AI support to include languages such as Arabic, Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese by the end of its current release cycle. This decision highlights Meta’s commitment to catering to a global audience by bridging language barriers and enhancing accessibility.

However, the deployment of these AI tools has not been without controversy. Users have expressed concern over Meta’s utilisation of Facebook and Instagram posts to refine its AI models. Although posts advocating against this practice gained traction, they do not offer legal privacy protections. Instead, users who wish to prevent their content from being used for AI model training must submit a formal objection through the privacy settings of their respective applications.

Meta continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI technology, aiming to enhance user interaction while addressing privacy concerns and regulatory frameworks across various regions. The company's ongoing AI developments underscore its strategic focus on global expansion and innovation, as it introduces advanced AI tools to a diverse set of markets around the world.
