Real-Time Innovations Secures $1.25 Million Contract to Advance AI-Enabled Air Force Systems
In a significant development for AI-enhanced military training and simulation, Real-Time Innovations (RTI), a leading infrastructure software company for intelligent systems, has been awarded a $1.25 million contract under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II programme. This contract will see RTI working on developing a secure, standardised, and reliable artificial intelligence framework intended to enhance interactions between software agents, human operators, and their operational environments. This initiative is expected to accelerate the deployment and integration of advanced AI technologies within Air Force training frameworks.
The technology at the heart of RTI’s proposal—Connext®—was chosen for its robust, battle-tested features, including its capabilities in simulation support, modularity, scalability, security, and resilience within complex intelligent systems. The Connext® communication framework, based on the Data Distribution Service (DDS™) standard, meets the distributed communication demands of critical systems, providing modular solutions that require less code and reduce development costs.
As military strategies increasingly incorporate autonomous systems, RTI's Connext® framework is poised to play a pivotal role in real-time data processing across various devices and locations, aiding in optimised performance and enhancing decision-making processes. Paul Pazandak, RTI's Director of Research, underscored the importance of such technology, stating that modular, data-centric security solutions are imperative for the sustainable development of large-scale, distributed real-world systems. He highlighted that present enterprise AI solutions do not adequately address these needs. Pazandak expressed enthusiasm about the sustained support from the SBIR programme to further develop their open standards-based framework, crucial for the creation of AI-enabled solutions for Air Force personnel.
The contract awarded to RTI is a part of extensive SBIR-funded initiatives aimed at enhancing autonomous features of unmanned aerial vehicles and improving their human-machine interfaces. This involves leveraging generative AI technology along with rigorous testing and model-based systems engineering. Such developments are crucial for creating autonomous systems capable of meeting safety, security, and reliability standards required for deploying long-range, non-lethal drones in surveillance, electronic warfare, and communications roles.
