Samsung has recently unveiled a series of forthcoming enhancements to its SmartThings platform, aimed at augmenting the experience of users in the realm of smart home management. This announcement was made during the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC 2024), showcasing the company's commitment to advancing its smart home ecosystem.
One of the standout features anticipated to arrive in October is "Home Insight," an innovative tool designed to optimise the performance of smart homes. According to Samsung, Home Insight will allow for the deactivation of idle devices at scheduled times or when users are absent, thereby enhancing energy efficiency. The feature will also have the capability to collect and analyse data related to device utilisation and historical home statistics, contributing to a more seamless and automated home environment. Additionally, it will provide reminders for turning off devices that have been unintentionally left on and utilise calendar dates, such as birthdays, to propose enjoyable home activities.
Moreover, Samsung is set to introduce Edge AI technology across all its screen-enabled devices through the SmartThings Hub. This development intends to embed artificial intelligence within consumer devices, thereby improving user experience and device operability. A notable collaboration with Kohler will see enhancements in monitoring water usage via SmartThings, indicative of Samsung's holistic approach to smart home technology. Furthermore, the integration of SmartThings’ Door Lock feature with Digital Home Key in Samsung Wallet is expected in 2025, marking an evolution in digital security solutions.
Further expansion within the SmartThings platform includes deeper integration with YouTube Music, as disclosed during the conference. Users will be able to synchronise their smart lighting with specific music tracks from YouTube Music. This enhancement promises particular compatibility with popular smart lighting systems such as Philips Hue, Wiz, Yeelight, and Lifx.
The move towards a more interconnected home environment builds on previous updates released this past July. These updates allowed for the pairing of a variety of home appliances, including refrigerators, air conditioners, and laundry equipment, with the SmartThings app. Additionally, Samsung introduced "Shareable Routines," which ease the sharing of device routines among users via QR codes, thereby enhancing household coordination.
These updates align with SmartThings' ongoing support for Matter, an industry-unifying connectivity standard. While the last update included compatibility for Matter 1.2 devices, such as certain smart home gadgets, the forthcoming Matter 1.3 upgrade is set to widen this compatibility to include additional devices, including stoves, dryers, and electric vehicle chargers.
