Vector Space Biosciences and Advacam, both key players in the space technology and biotechnology sectors, have formed a strategic collaboration to develop satellite payloads and CubeSats designed to advance radiation measurement capabilities and biotechnology research in space. The agreement was formalised through a Letter of Intent (LOI) between the two companies, headquartered in Los Angeles, California, as announced on 13 October 2024.

Vector Space Biosciences (listed under the cryptocurrency symbol SBIO) is renowned for utilising artificial intelligence to optimise data within the space industry. Advacam is recognised for its sophisticated radiation detectors, particularly its contributions to radiation mapping aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Together, these companies aim to enhance space research through innovative technology and data integration.

A significant element of this partnership includes the development and deployment of AI-enhanced CubeSats and satellite payloads which will actively participate in crucial radiation measurements. The payload designs are set to include Advacam's cutting-edge Timepix2 radiation detectors alongside biotechnology modules. Data harvested from these missions will be transmitted to Microsoft Orbital ground stations, subsequently becoming part of the broader dataset used for advanced analysis in conjunction with repositories like NASA's GeneLab.

Vector Space Biosciences is preparing for its first satellite mission, tentatively scheduled between early and mid-2025. This mission will not only carry state-of-the-art technology like the Timepix2 detectors but will also include a biological experiment involving approximately 50 Tardigrades, commonly known as Waterbears. These organisms will be instrumental in studying the effects of space radiation on biological and synthetic materials, including AI semiconductors and other critical chipsets.

The collaborative efforts outlined in the LOI reveal intentions for up to two to three launches weekly, with each mission carrying multiple payloads and CubeSats. Partners, including pharmaceutical giants such as Merck and Bristol Myers, are anticipated to sponsor these launches, thereby generating valuable data for drug development and other scientific breakthroughs, all processed through complex AI models.

The LOI establishes several focus areas for this collaboration. These include revenue-sharing strategies for clients in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and AI semiconductor industries, using Advacam’s technologies to gain insights from space radiation data. Additionally, there will be efforts towards placing payloads in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), optimising orbit paths similar to the ISS to gather precise radiation measurements relevant to this sector.

Further collaboration goals include testing various devices in LEO's vacuum conditions, maintaining flight heritage logs for Advacam, joint marketing initiatives, and customer referrals. Moreover, there is a keen interest in expanding AI modelling capabilities to provide insightful data analyses on radiation particles such as Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and High-Z Energy particles (HZEs).

Through this alliance, Advacam and Vector Space Biosciences aim to enhance AI-driven service offerings, building on Vector Space's expertise, in part from its collaborations with institutions like Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The partnership envisions a future where biotechnology and AI converge to unlock new possibilities in space research and its applications back on Earth.
