Walmart Unveils 'Wallaby': A New Era of AI-Powered Retail

Retail giant Walmart has introduced a new set of AI initiatives designed to revolutionise personalised shopping and customer service in what the company is calling the "Adaptive Retail" era. Central to these developments is Wallaby, Walmart's freshly launched large language model (LLM), which represents a significant step forward in the integration of artificial intelligence in retail.

On Wednesday, Walmart announced the debut of its retail-specific AI models, including Wallaby, which has been meticulously trained on decades of Walmart's data. The model encompasses company-specific insights about customers, employees, Walmart-specific terminology, along with the corporation’s values and brand-specific data, ensuring a robust foundation geared towards enhancing customer interaction.

In addition to Wallaby, Walmart is also advancing other AI-driven solutions. These include a "content decision platform" which uses artificial intelligence to better understand consumer behaviour, a generative AI tool to anticipate the specific content a shopper might want to see on Walmart's website, and an augmented reality (AR) platform named Retina, designed to engage customers in virtual environments through virtual spaces and avatars.

Complementing these innovations, Walmart is also in the process of developing new immersive commerce application programming interfaces (APIs). Currently in the alpha testing stage, these APIs are being trialled with the renowned game engine Unity and the virtual world platform Zepeto, suggesting a significant leap toward more interactive digital shopping experiences.

These advancements aim to enhance the existing array of AI tools employed by Walmart, including previous models and platforms like Converse, an in-house AI platform launched last year for improving customer service and chat-based shopping, and Element AI, introduced earlier this year to optimise search functions and market intelligence, among other uses.

Desirée Gosby, Vice President of Emerging Technology at Walmart Global Tech, revealed that Wallaby is currently undergoing rigorous internal testing and there are plans to roll out Wallaby-powered customer experiences in the United States by the end of 2025. Additionally, Walmart International expects to leverage Wallaby to provide personalised product recommendations in Canada and Mexico.

Gosby highlighted Wallaby's capability to draw nuanced insights and distinctions, stating, "From a consumer perspective, [Wallaby has] a good understanding of our products and what it is that we sell and we serve." She added, "An example of that would be having a deep understanding of our brand. We have 'Great Value' as a brand within Walmart. And in the generic sense, everybody wants to get a great value. But knowing in the context of Walmart that you’re actually talking about our brand specifically is important to us to make sure we’re communicating correctly with our customers."

Wallaby joins an increasing roster of AI models named after animals, such as Llama from Meta, Orca from Microsoft, and several of Google’s PaLM 2 models. Explaining the inspiration behind Wallaby's name, Gosby noted, "We like animal names, so we started with that. But obviously we wanted to do something that was relevant also to the Walmart name. There’s not a lot to choose from, but Wallaby was a good name and that we all sort of settled on."

Walmart's foray into enhancing its AI capabilities comes amidst an industry-wide trend where tech giants and startups alike are exploring AI applications in retail. Competitors such as Amazon have also been developing AI tools for both advertisers and customers, underscoring the rapid adoption of AI in the retail sector. These efforts align with findings from a recent McKinsey report, indicating a rise in AI adoption among consumer packaged goods leaders, from 42% in 2023 to 71% in 2024.

As Walmart continues to evolve its digital landscape with Wallaby and other AI innovations, the broader retail sector is witnessing a push towards more integrated and sophisticated use of AI, reshaping how companies address consumer needs and operational challenges in the digital age.
