San Francisco-based startup Writer has unveiled a substantial artificial intelligence model that it hopes will rival established enterprise solutions from industry giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. This latest development in the competitive landscape of AI technology was announced on Wednesday, 9 October.
Unlike its competitors who often invest significant financial resources into training AI systems, Writer has adopted a cost-efficient strategy by spending approximately $700,000 on its latest model. This budget encompasses expenses related to both data procurement and the acquisition of graphics processing units. The company's frugal approach has attracted the interest of investors, with reports suggesting that Writer is in the process of raising up to $200 million, bringing its valuation to an impressive $1.9 billion. This is a substantial increase from the previous valuation of over $500 million in September last year, when the company secured $100 million in investment.
Writer's cost-saving strategy involves the use of synthetic data—artificially generated information that imitates real-world data without infringing on privacy. This method has been gaining traction across the industry as an effective way to reduce expenses related to data collection.
Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Writer, Waseem Alshikh, revealed that the company has been refining its synthetic data pipeline over the years. This technology underpins a platform of generative AI tools aimed at boosting productivity in diverse sectors including marketing, product development, operations, and human resources, primarily through the generation and analysis of human-like text.
The AI model introduced by Writer allows corporate clients to generate content that closely resembles human-written material. Among its clientele, Writer boasts more than 250 enterprise customers, such as Accenture, Uber, Salesforce, L’Oreal, and Vanguard.
The generative AI market is poised for significant growth, with projections suggesting that revenue might surpass $1 trillion by the end of the decade. Data from PitchBook indicates a notable investment surge in the generative AI space, with $26.8 billion already injected this year, surpassing the $25.9 billion recorded last year—a figure more than twice that of 2022’s investments.
In related developments, industry leader Meta has also recently entered the fray with its own AI video generator, as the competitive environment continues to drive innovation and expansion in artificial intelligence technologies.
