Zoom Introduces AI-Powered Digital Avatars for Workplace Communication
Zoom Video Communications has unveiled an innovative feature that allows office workers to interact with colleagues through a digital avatar that closely replicates their appearance and voice. Announced during the Zoomtopia 2024 conference, this development is part of the company's enhanced AI offering known as Zoom AI Companion 2.0. The feature will soon be available to paid Zoom Workplace users at no extra cost.
Smita Hashim, Zoom's chief product officer, described the initiative in a blog post on Wednesday. She highlighted the ability to create video content for demonstrations or training sessions using just a text script. The digital avatar, she explained, will appear to speak these scripts without the need for multiple takes, offering a seamless user experience.
The AI Companion leverages generative AI technology to streamline tasks within the Zoom Workplace suite. Users can interact with it via a side panel input menu, allowing them to perform tasks using natural language commands instead of traditional app manipulation methods. A demonstration at the conference showed how an employee could effortlessly schedule a meeting using a simple text command.
In addition to scheduling meetings, AI Companion can summarise meetings, thus raising questions about the necessity of attending them in real-time. The Zoom Workplace productivity suite includes various functionalities such as Calendar, Docs, Tasks, Phone, and Clips, the latter being a feature that records short video clips for asynchronous communication, reducing the need for live interactions.
By mid-2025, Zoom plans to expand these capabilities through a $12 per user monthly add-on, increasing the suite of applications AI Companion can access. This expansion will incorporate productivity tools like Atlassian's Jira & Confluence, Workday, Zendesk, ServiceNow, Box, Asana, and Hubspot, enriching the user's digital work environment.
The introduction of custom avatars for Zoom Clips, scheduled for the first half of 2025, promises to elevate asynchronous communication. Users will be able to create personalised AI-generated avatars, which will speak in a synced, soundalike voice generated from text scripts. To do this, users will record an initial 'seed video' to help craft their digital selves for future communications.
This technological stride is paralleled by similar advancements from Microsoft Azure, which is developing photorealistic avatars capable of voice synthesis from text scripts. Such advancements in AI avatar technology, notably demonstrated in commercial applications like Photo AI, raise issues concerning deception, especially with the potential creation of deepfakes.
Addressing concerns over misuse, Zoom assures that the avatar feature is fortified with safeguards against deceit. The company is employing advanced authentication, watermarking technology, and stringent usage policies to ensure such digital creations are identifiable and not used mischievously. A Zoom spokesperson confirmed, "We employ advanced authentication and watermarking technology to make it obvious when a clip is generated with an avatar, and strict usage policies to help ensure the integrity of avatar-generated content and prevent misuse or deepfake creation."
The evolving landscape of digital communication tools thus enters an era where the lines between real and simulated interactions become increasingly blurred, leaving technology companies to navigate and mitigate potential ethical and legal challenges.
