Klook, the popular online booking platform, has made a creative splash on TikTok with an innovative digital advertisement in celebration of its 10th anniversary. The ad, which has been tagged as interactive, presents a visually engaging narrative set against the backdrop of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. A man, holding a bouquet of colourful balloons, leisurely walks across a bridge. As the scene progresses, he releases the balloons into the sky, where a digital plane appears, trailing a banner that announces "The biggest travel sale of the decade".

The advertisement, designed to capture the attention of TikTok users, is accompanied by the caption, "It's our birthday, but you're getting the gifts", alongside the hashtags '#KlookTurns10' and '#KlookBirthday'. This creative endeavour coincides with Klook's substantial anniversary sale, which seeks to provide exciting offers and experiences to its users, as explained by Marcus Yong, Klook's Vice President of Global Marketing.

Yong declared that the 10th anniversary presents an ideal opportunity for Klook to take bold steps and experiment with new advertising formats that captivate audiences. He highlighted the integration of artificial intelligence to create pseudo-real out-of-home (OOH) advertisements that visually interact with iconic travel landmarks. By leveraging TikTok, a platform known for its short, engaging videos, Klook aims to reach modern travellers in an impactful and memorable manner.

The interactive ad has reportedly received an enthusiastic response from viewers and has significantly boosted interest in Klook's 10.10 sale, encouraging the company to extend the flash sale due to its success.

The use of interactive digital ads, also referred to as fake out of home (FOOH) ads, is an emerging trend in Singapore's advertising landscape. For instance, Starbucks Singapore has embraced this format as well, launching its "Shiok-Ah-CCino" campaign. The campaign creatively transforms Singapore's landmarks into stages for showcasing two new drinks, using familiar motifs such as the Merlion Bearista as part of the narrative.

Despite the growing popularity of FOOH ads, there is still ambiguity in the industry regarding regulations for such campaigns. Chloe Neo, CEO of Omnicom Media Group Singapore and chair of the media and OOH charter for the Association of Advertising and Marketing Singapore, noted that existing regulations are designed to govern physical spaces and do not currently cover the domain of virtual or air spaces used by FOOH ads. Neo emphasised the importance of balancing creativity, authenticity, and trust, as these elements are highly sought after by consumers and are vital to maintaining the integrity of advertising campaigns.

As Singaporean consumers and advertisers navigate this new terrain, brands like Klook and Starbucks are setting precedents with their innovative digital strategies, potentially paving the way for more creative endeavours in the realm of virtual advertising.
