Omnea, a cutting-edge AI-powered platform dedicated to enhancing procurement orchestration and supplier risk management, has successfully secured $20 million in its Series A funding round. This significant capital injection aligns with Omnea's mission to simplify procurement and provide businesses with augmented control over their expenditure.
The venture, initiated in 2022 by Ben Freeman and Ben Allen, seeks to address the increasingly decentralised and often cumbersome procurement processes faced by modern businesses. Traditionally, purchasing can take an average of six months, involving more than eleven stakeholders before reaching fruition. This lengthy process frequently encourages employees to bypass necessary procurement protocols, leading to unmanaged supplier risks and ineffective IT resource utilisation, commonly known as shadow IT.
In a landscape where companies, particularly within the technology sector, deal with an extensive array of suppliers—averaging 125 tier-one suppliers annually—the need for streamlined procurement solutions is pressing. The existing processes often result in financial inefficiencies, with neglected contract negotiations, lapsed renewals, and underutilised supplier relationships causing financial drain.
Ben Freeman, previously the US General Manager and Head of International Growth at cybersecurity firm Tessian, founded Omnea to revolutionise this fragmented process. He recognised the necessity for businesses to reconstruct their procurement strategies and abandon outdated systems to meet modern demands for capital efficiency, risk management, and compliance.
Omnea provides a holistic solution by automating the entire supplier lifecycle management, covering both spending and risk assessment. By implementing no-code workflows, the platform aims to fortify a company's procurement process. Each participant in the procurement chain, be it legal, finance, IT, or information security, receives a tailored and streamlined experience, focusing solely on essential information for their role. This not only conserves time and resources but also mitigates risks associated with information security and compliance.
The firm's client roster includes notable entities such as AlphaSights, McAfee, Onfido, and TeamViewer, underscoring the platform's growing reputation in addressing procurement challenges.
With the new funding, Omnea plans to expand its operational capacity significantly. The company aims to triple its workforce by 2025, with investments directed towards research, development, and go-to-market teams, in addition to establishing bases in the United States for broader market reach.
Accel spearheaded the funding round, with continuing support from previous investors First Round Capital and Point Nine. Prominent figures such as David Clarke (ex-CTO of Workday), Claire Hughes Johnson (former COO of Stripe), and Anne Raimondi (COO of Asana) also back Omnea as angel investors.
With the infusion of new funds, Omnea is set to enhance its AI capabilities, optimising the procurement experience further. Moreover, the company is rolling out an advanced suite of third-party risk management features, designed to continuously assess supplier risks throughout their lifecycle.
Sonali De Rycker, a Partner at Accel, expressed confidence in Omnea's potential to redefine procurement processes, which are often criticised for being inefficient and costly. She emphasised Accel's excitement in rekindling their partnership with Freeman, having previously invested in Tessian.
As Omnea continues to grow, it remains focused on meeting the critical needs of companies by enabling a more controlled and efficient procurement process that addresses not only spending but also critical security and governance issues.
