PicsArt, a prominent platform in the realm of image and video editing, has been on a substantial journey since its inception over a decade ago. Established as a pioneering all-in-one editing service for mobile devices before 2011, PicsArt quickly grew in popularity, boasting more than 150 million monthly active users. However, this growth has not come without challenges, particularly due to increasing competition from industry giants like Canva and Adobe.

At the recent World Congress of Information Technology (WCIT) conference held in Armenia, the company's Chief Technology Officer, Artavazd Mehrabyan, discussed the competitive landscape and the evolving nature of PicsArt's technology. Mehrabyan highlighted the difficulties in maintaining a distinct market presence. He noted that many innovations initiated by PicsArt have been replicated by competitors, particularly in the domain of AI, where similar capabilities are being introduced by other mainstream photo services.

A notable feature of PicsArt is its object generation capability, which uses advanced AI tools to create photo elements. This feature has been imitated across various platforms, indicating the competitive overlap in the market. To distinguish itself, PicsArt is focusing on enhancing the quality of its offerings rather than simply expanding its toolset.

During an early phase when artificial intelligence was still emerging, PicsArt devoted a significant portion of its research to optimizing mobile-based editing. The company invested in developing hybrid infrastructures, including multi-cloud solutions and data centre capabilities, to manage its expanding user base efficiently. This foundation supported the introduction of its first AI feature in 2016, allowing it to operate small models offline on user devices.

The technology's evolution has seen PicsArt transition into an AI-first organisation. This transformation is marked by the launch of larger AI models and more advanced capabilities, such as background removal and replacement. Furthering this AI-centric direction, PicsArt has been developing its creative AI models from scratch, utilising user-generated content under a 'free to edit' licence for training purposes.

The 'free to edit' licence enables users to contribute their photos to the community, permitting others to modify and build upon them. This has furnished PicsArt with a vast repository of user-generated content, although, as Mehrabyan explained, not all of it is immediately usable. The data undergoes rigorous cleansing and processing to ensure it is suitable for AI training.

A central focus for PicsArt has been constructing a "data flywheel" — a dynamic, self-sustaining system that facilitates data annotation, usage, and continuous improvement. This involves an intricate feedback loop, predominantly AI-driven, supplemented by human feedback. It aims not only to enhance the platform's outputs but also to develop what Mehrabyan calls "contextual intelligence."

Contextual intelligence aims to understand and anticipate user needs, particularly beneficial for the platform’s business-oriented users. This capability allows PicsArt to streamline creative processes for professional applications, such as social media campaigns, by integrating user-specific contexts like brand language and design preferences.

Looking ahead, Mehrabyan envisions PicsArt evolving into an agent-based ecosystem, where users are assisted by AI "co-pilots." These virtual assistants would possess comprehensive knowledge of user preferences and contexts, simplifying the completion of creative tasks. Additionally, these agents could handle repetitive tasks in bulk, offering conveniences such as automating design applications across multiple resources.

The global AI image editing market is on a significant growth trajectory. According to Future Markets Insights, the market is anticipated to rise from $80.3 million in 2024 to $217.9 million by 2034. Furthermore, AI-driven generation, a core aspect of tools like PicsArt, is projected to expand by 38% from $8.7 billion in 2024 to $60.8 billion by 2030.

As PicsArt continues to position itself at the forefront of creative AI technologies, the company seeks to empower users to leverage AI innovations, transforming how creativity is both expressed and utilised in professional settings. Without overtly advocating for specific viewpoints, Mehrabyan suggests that while AI may initially seem to challenge traditional creative roles, it ultimately offers broader opportunities for professionals to expand their skill sets with enhanced depth and efficiency.
