In an intriguing development in the world of classic rock, Alex Van Halen, the renowned drummer, has opened up about a potential project to revamp unreleased Van Halen material using cutting-edge technology. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Van Halen discussed his ambitious plans, which include employing artificial intelligence to generate new guitar solos and potentially collaborating with Led Zeppelin's legendary frontman, Robert Plant, to provide the vocals.
The idea emerges amid ongoing grief following the death of Eddie Van Halen, Alex's brother and the iconic guitarist of the band. Alex revealed that he has explored the depths of the band's archives, discovering an abundance of partially developed tracks and numerous jam session recordings amassed over several decades. However, he admits that these bits and pieces, while promising, do not yet coalesce into full songs.
In order to breathe new life into these scattered compositions, Van Halen has engaged with OpenAI, the organisation behind the revolutionary AI language model ChatGPT, to analyse and emulate the distinct playing patterns of his late brother. This technological approach is aimed at generating guitar solos that resonate with Eddie's style. While ambitious, this plan is also seen as a tribute to honour his brother's musical legacy.
Moreover, in an unexpected twist, Alex considered reaching out to Robert Plant, whom he last met over thirty years ago, to infuse the completed tracks with vocals. "You’re gonna think I’m out of my mind,” he remarked on the potential collaboration. However, he remains hopeful, suggesting that when the timing is right, all elements will come together to actualise this vision.
The interview also touched on other aspects of the band's legacy, including the failed Van Halen tribute tour, which Alex attributes to David Lee Roth. Additionally, he mentioned that Ozzy Osbourne was approached as a possible frontman for a new iteration of the band, although these plans did not come to fruition.
Adding to the anticipation, Alex Van Halen's memoir, titled "Brothers," is scheduled for release on October 24. Published by Harper Collins, the memoir promises an intimate glimpse into Alex's personal journey through family, friendship, and the profound bond he shared with his brother Eddie. According to the publishers, "Brothers" is poised to stand apart from traditional rock-and-roll memoirs, offering readers a heartfelt tribute to Eddie's enduring impact on music and his brother's life.
This revelation of using artificial intelligence to simulate Eddie's guitar work not only underscores the deep bond shared between the Van Halen brothers but also reflects the evolving landscape of music production in the digital age.
