Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's international division has unveiled an advanced version of its artificial intelligence (AI) translation tool, Marco MT. This development has been positioned as a significant advancement in the field of AI-driven translations, with the company claiming that it outperforms existing solutions from major tech competitors such as Google's translation services, DeepL, and ChatGPT.

The newly enhanced Marco MT aims to support merchants on Alibaba’s platform by improving communication with a global customer base. By aiding in the creation of product pages in diverse languages, it is designed to facilitate broader market reach and engagement. Currently, the tool supports 15 languages and is built on Alibaba’s in-house AI model, Qwen. The model is adept at interpreting context-specific nuances, including cultural and industry-specific terminologies, which is crucial for effective translation and localisation.

Kaifu Zhang, Vice President of Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group and the head of the company’s AI projects, emphasised the tool’s strategic role during a conversation with CNBC. He noted that the primary objective of Marco MT is to enhance the commercial success of merchants using Alibaba’s international platforms. By ensuring merchants can better serve global markets, Alibaba aims to bolster the overall performance and appeal of its marketplace.

The upgrade of this tool comes at a time when Alibaba’s international business segment is emerging as a key growth engine for the company. This segment, inclusive of e-commerce platforms like AliExpress and Lazada, showed a substantial 32% increase in revenue, bringing in $4.03 billion in the second quarter ending June, compared to the prior year. As Alibaba's domestic sales face sluggish growth in traditional platforms like Taobao and Tmall, the expansion and innovation in international markets have become increasingly vital.

Beyond translation tools, Alibaba has actively embraced AI technologies across its operations. Notably, in September, it introduced an AI-powered sourcing tool aimed at streamlining the procurement process for US buyers. This initiative, amid complex geopolitical relations between China and the USA, underscores Alibaba's commitment to leveraging AI to enhance its global commerce capabilities. Additionally, the company launched an English version of its Taobao app in Singapore, gaining rapid popularity and exemplifying AI's potential in expanding digital reach.

Moreover, Alibaba continues to invest in AI innovation through open-source models. The company has released over 100 open-source AI models under the Qwen 2.5 banner, targeting a wide array of sectors from automotive to gaming and scientific research, hinting at its broader AI ambitions.

These strategic moves reflect Alibaba's dedication to advancing its AI solutions, which are central to its international growth strategy. Such innovations not only aim to improve operational efficiencies and market penetration but also strengthen Alibaba’s position in the competitive global market landscape.
