Fei-Fei Li's journey in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) is marked with notable achievements and a unique reluctance to embrace some of the accolades bestowed upon her. Known widely for her pioneering work in AI, particularly in developing a massive database of classified images that has significantly advanced computers' ability to interpret digital images and videos, Li's initial response to being labelled the "godmother" of AI was discomfort.
Fei-Fei Li is currently at the helm of World Labs, a startup that has successfully secured $230 million in funding. The company's primary goal revolves around crafting AI solutions that are capable of understanding and simulating the three-dimensional world. During a discussion at the Fortune Most Powerful Women conference, which focused on the "Future of (Ethical) AI," Li expressed her continuing fascination with the potential of machine intelligence. She was joined by Campbell Brown, a senior advisor for AI content and licensing at TollBit, who highlighted Li's pivotal role in deciphering and setting the boundaries of AI capabilities amidst widespread enthusiasm for the technology. Brown suggested that some enthusiasts might have been overly enthusiastic about AI's prospects, but noted that Li's work with World Labs continues to engage profoundly with expansive ideas.
Li explained that throughout the protracted timeline of human cognitive evolution, language development stands out as truly remarkable. She detailed that it took approximately 430 million years for sophisticated animals to develop spatial intelligence capabilities, while linguistic abilities were established much more rapidly, within around a million years—a feat now being mirrored in AI through efforts like those by graduate students dedicated to mastering machine learning.
Despite her extensive credentials and experience, including her previous roles as Vice President and Chief Scientist at Google, a professorship at Stanford, and as an accomplished author, Li was initially hesitant to assume a prominent leadership position. Her initial instinct was to reject the title of "godmother" of AI, feeling uncomfortable with the distinction. Nevertheless, she chose to embrace it, viewing the recognition as a platform to inspire more women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM)—fields that have historically been male-dominated.
Li pointed out that historically, many men have been called founding fathers or godfathers in the arena of science and technology. She questioned the visibility of women's contributions if such titles were easily dismissed by women. Her acceptance of the title symbolizes a commitment to elevating the presence and voices of women in these fields.
While addressing claims about AI's limitless scaling, production, and economic impact, Li cautioned against the exaggeration that often surrounds the technology. She maintained that AI does possess the ability to transform the world, and therefore, everyone who takes an interest in AI, whether it is in research, governance, or technology adoption, should have the opportunity to engage with its evolution. Li emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that it is crucial for people from all walks of life to feel they can contribute to the technological transformation AI brings about.
