Google Rolls Out New Pixel Weather App to Older Devices With the Latest Update

Google has announced the rollout of its new Pixel Weather app across older Pixel devices, extending its availability beyond its latest flagship models. The app, which was initially launched alongside the Pixel 9 series earlier this year, features a modernised interface and a range of AI-driven functionalities designed to enhance user experience.

The app will be accessible on Pixel 6 and newer models as part of the October 2024 Pixel Feature Drop, accompanying the Android 15 update. This update not only brings the new weather app but also introduces a suite of other features, such as improved Night Sight functionality for Instagram, Google's Theft Protection suite, and Adaptive Vibration settings.

The Pixel Weather app boasts a minimalist design with a dynamic gradient background that adjusts according to current weather conditions. The top portion of the app displays key weather information, including the current temperature, conditions, and daily high and low figures. Below this, users will find forecast cards with hourly updates and a 10-day forecast.

Enhancing personalisation, the app incorporates widgets that provide information on wind speed and direction, sunrise and sunset times, air quality index (AQI), visibility, UV index, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. These widgets, along with the 10-day forecast card, can be rearranged according to user preferences. Additionally, redesigned home screen widgets offer at-a-glance weather updates.

A standout feature of the app is the AI Weather Report, powered by Google's Gemini. This feature generates concise weather summaries and offers practical insights to help users plan their day effectively. Furthermore, the Weather Map feature provides rain forecasts for selected cities in the US, EU, and UK, displaying an eight-hour precipitation forecast that is particularly useful for those planning road trips.

In response to user demand, Google has also incorporated a Pollen Data Block in certain regions, such as France, Germany, Italy, and the UK. This addition allows users to check pollen index levels, identify pollen types, and examine forecasts before venturing outdoors.

The Pixel Weather app will be available globally for Pixel 6 and newer devices. It is also being introduced to the Pixel Tablet, enhancing weather-tracking capabilities across Google's product range. For users who do not own a Pixel device but wish to experience the app, Google provides an option to sideload the APK on Android 14 devices.

This expansion marks a significant step for Google in delivering consistent and enhanced user experiences across its ecosystem, harnessing the power of AI to provide detailed and useful information at users' fingertips.
