The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District's (KPBSD) Board of Education convened on 7th October to delve into the burgeoning realm of generative artificial intelligence (AI) within educational settings. This meeting, held by invitation from Superintendent Clayton Holland, featured a presentation by Myron Dueck, a Canadian consultant renowned for his expertise in AI applications in education.

Myron Dueck, known for his collaboration with the district under the Project GRAD Kenai Peninsula, presented a comprehensive analysis of how tools like ChatGPT can reshape classroom activities for both teachers and students. Project GRAD is an initiative aiming to enhance educational outcomes in the peninsula's rural and isolated communities, in partnership with various local organisations.

The presentation spanned over an hour and offered insights into how generative AI can assist in designing lesson plans and facilitating classroom discussions. Dueck highlighted that while AI could generate lesson plans on topics such as bullying or environmental science, the technology still requires the seasoned judgment of educators. He illustrated this point with an example from physics, where ChatGPT suggested a “conduction race” experiment with copper and aluminium wires. A seasoned physics teacher critiqued this suggestion, noting the impracticality of students observing differences in conduction due to the speed at which both metals conduct electricity.

Despite the technology's limitations, Dueck advocated for its role as a tool to save time and generate ideas. He stated that generative AI like ChatGPT can enhance educational practices but cannot replace the intrinsic value of educators' experience and intuition. He further discussed the imperative of adapting education to technological advancements, noting AI's capacity to answer factual queries and generate creative writing, while lacking the ability to share personal experiences or reflect on nuanced classroom discussions.

Board member Jason Tauriainen and Superintendent Holland both emphasised the significance of understanding AI's capabilities. They discussed the need for consistent, districtwide guidelines on AI usage to avoid disparate approaches across the district's 42 schools. Holland indicated that AI might also provide internal efficiencies for tasks like data analysis and policy referencing.

Interestingly, Holland noted that AI's rise has inadvertently encouraged more interactive, project-based learning—areas where AI cannot easily be applied. This shift, he observed, aligns with maintaining essential human interaction in education, a critical element he felt was diminished during the COVID-19 pandemic's remote learning phase.

The presentation concluded without delving deeply into the source of AI-generated information, a point of ongoing concern, given legal challenges faced by companies like OpenAI around copyright issues. Some have called for AI programs to credit original sources of the data they process, reflecting wider discussions on transparency in AI operations.
