The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced a suite of new features for its NBA App ahead of the 2024-25 season. Aiming to enhance the viewing experience for basketball enthusiasts, the updates promise an array of innovative technologies, notably including the multiviewer capability on NBA League Pass which will allow fans to keep an eye on up to four games simultaneously. This development caters to the interests of the league’s global viewership by offering a customizable and immersive experience.

The revamped NBA League Pass service now has features enabling users to smart-rewind games from any specific point, highlighting key plays and allowing full-game downloads for offline viewing. To accommodate different personal preferences, a variety of game recaps are available, such as "All Possessions," "10-Minute Condensed," and "Key Highlights." The app further enriches the fan experience by providing interactive synchronized stats and analytics, making users feel as though they are engaging with live content no matter the actual viewing time.

In a collaboration with Microsoft Azure, the NBA App will introduce "NBA Insights," an AI-powered tool designed to generate continuous text-based updates, bringing out significant narratives, performance analyses, and remarkable milestones. This tool enhances the viewing experience by delivering insights beyond standard statistics.

To broaden its international appeal, the app will incorporate generative AI to localise content, thereby providing game recaps in multiple languages, including French, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Select NBA games this season are set to utilise cutting-edge immersive technology for presentation. Fans in Los Angeles and Dallas will have the opportunity to enjoy immersive 8K games at Cosm's new "shared reality" venues beginning 22 October, coinciding with the Kia NBA Tip-Off 2024. Furthering this immersive experience, the NBA has partnered with Meta to stream 52 live games in virtual reality on the Meta Horizon Worlds and Xtadium platforms, utilising Meta Quest—Meta's official mixed reality headset.

Subscribers to NBA League Pass will have the added benefit of accessing nightly live 2D games in mixed reality, including real-time statistics. Comprehensive details, including schedules, are available for Meta Quest users. The league’s technological expansion continues with the “Next Gen integrated digital platform,” supporting direct-to-consumer streaming services for several teams. Teams such as the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns will have their dedicated streaming services via this platform.

Additionally, the app will feature more original content, initiated with "Pass the Rock: Rookie Year Edition," documenting the journey of San Antonio Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama to his coronation as the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year. Moreover, from 20 October, the NBA will unveil “Raising 18,” a docuseries narrated by five-time NBA All-Star Al Horford, chronicling the Boston Celtics’ path to the 2024 NBA Finals triumph.

Enhanced personalization features will also be part of the NBA App's offerings, such as the new ‘Following’ tab that aggregates updates from favourite teams and players, and a revamped “Game Stories” section that provides pregame analyses, highlights, and interactive polls. The “Moments” feature, recognized for its social media-inspired format, now supports multiple languages and is accessible on Roku TV for larger screen viewing.

The NBA League Pass will offer access to over 800 live out-of-market games, along with alternative telecast options, such as in-language streams and the “NBA Strategy Stream.” A noteworthy addition is “NBA HooperVision,” featuring commentary by NBA legend Quentin Richardson.

In November, NBA League Pass will be the primary platform for streaming weekend games, eliminating national blackouts, and offering up to 15 games per day. NBA ID, the league's global membership programme, provides exclusive benefits, including a complimentary League Pass for the season's first Member Days on 16-17 November.

NBA League Pass packages can be purchased on NBA.com and the NBA App, with premium commercial-free versions available for $159.99 per season or $24.99 per month. Standard packages are priced at $109.99 per season or $16.99 per month. The app's development is jointly managed by NBA Digital, in partnership with TNT Sports, and powered by Microsoft Azure, underscoring the NBA's commitment to advancing the digital sports viewing experience.
