Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled its latest advancements in industrial Internet of Things (IoT) technology with the introduction of the IQ9, IQ8, and IQ6 series chipsets. The announcement came as a significant highlight at the Embedded World North America 2024 event.

These new chipsets are designed to address a wide range of applications in industrial settings. The IQ9 series targets premium applications, offering top-tier AI performance capabilities, while the IQ8 series is tailored for mid-tier applications. The entry-level IQ6 series is designed for cost-effective industrial solutions.

Each chipset in the Qualcomm IQ series is equipped with specific features and capabilities to cater to different industrial needs. The IQ9 series, including the models IQ-9100 and IQ-9075, is designed for applications requiring high-speed processing and advanced computer vision in sectors such as robotic automation and edge AI boxes. It features an octa-core Kryo CPU and AI performance capabilities of up to 100 TOPS, allowing it to handle complex AI tasks efficiently. Additionally, the IQ9 series supports extensive moisture range use and multiple display interfaces, with the ability to manage up to 12 displays concurrently.

The IQ8 series comprises the IQ-8300 and IQ-8275 models and is aimed at scenarios where balanced performance and cost are critical. These processors offer AI capabilities ranging from 20 to 40 TOPS and include features that allow the support of up to five displays. This series suits industrial automatic systems, industrial inspection machinery, and similar applications needing robust AI support but not the highest level of processing power.

At the more affordable end, the IQ6 series, including the IQ-615 model, serves industries focused on gateway solutions and handheld industrial devices. It provides a more modest AI performance but is built with a design that optimises for cost efficiency without sacrificing essential functionalities. The chipset supports a range of peripheral interfaces and wireless connectivity options to ensure flexibility and compatibility with various industrial systems.

Each chipset in the new Qualcomm IQ series supports operating systems like Yocto Linux and Ubuntu, lending manufacturers the flexibility needed in IoT development. The integration of Qualcomm's IoT Solutions Framework offers additional support, ensuring these chipsets are supplemented with necessary software enablers and ecosystem support.

Despite the detailed specifications of the newly introduced chipsets, Qualcomm has yet to announce specific timelines for production rollouts or availability to customers. The company's announcement suggests that further information can be expected as developments progress.
