In the rapidly evolving world of digital marketing, the introduction of AI-powered tools has intensified discussions around search advertising. Among the latest entrants are tools like Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, which promise to revolutionise how marketers approach advertising strategies. However, despite the promise of enhanced efficiency and targeting capabilities, some marketers remain sceptical about these AI tools due to the uncertainties surrounding their impact on reach and return on ad spend.

This landscape is being reshaped by several players attempting to challenge Google’s longstanding dominance in the search market. Although Google continues to hold a commanding 80% share of the market, new competitors like TikTok, and the potential upcoming addition of Reddit, are vying for attention. In a significant development, a federal judge ruled in August that Google has monopolised the search advertising marketplace. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently engaged in a separate antitrust trial against Google’s advertising technology.

As Google’s position faces scrutiny, competitors are actively releasing new advertising tools, including those incorporating AI. However, these developments have yet to significantly influence the distribution of advertising budgets. Industry insiders note that while the introduction of AI has sparked interest among marketers, adoption remains tentative until more concrete performance metrics and return on investment are established.

Dan Toplitt, SVP and head of search and digital experience at Kinesso, a performance marketing agency, acknowledged the challenges ahead. He noted that early data from various partners indicates some success with specific campaign types, but emphasised the need for comprehensive measurement. This, he argues, will enable advertisers to compare new AI-driven ad units with traditional ones effectively.

Perplexity, one of the emergent AI tools, is reportedly charging based on CPM (cost per thousand impressions), which differs from the usual CPC (cost per click) model prevalent in paid search. This suggests a shift in focus towards brand reach and exposure rather than clicks or impressions. "This philosophical shift could reshape the way search is integrated within the broader media landscape," Toplitt remarked, although he refrained from naming specific partners, underscoring Kinesso’s "partner agnostic" stance.

Concerns about brand safety and consumer backlash have also emerged. Brandy Alexander-Wimberly, director of client innovation at TandemTide digital agency, expressed reservations about the reliability of AI, particularly issues like data privacy, accuracy, and potential "hallucinations" in AI-driven content. If the distinction between AI-generated ads and genuine content becomes too blurred, there could be a negative impact on ad performance.

In terms of budget allocation, Alexander-Wimberly explained that TandemTide is integrating AI tools available on major platforms like Google. Depending on client goals, up to 50% of budgets may be earmarked for experimental purposes, although precise figures were not disclosed.

Industry experts commonly agree that the current economic pressures have made advertisers cautious about reallocating budgets. Brandon Biancalani, head of paid media at Modifly, mentioned that AI tools have not yet attracted enough interest to justify a significant shift in budgeting for the fourth quarter.

Phil Lewicki, associate media director at Dagger marketing agency, also highlighted this cautious approach. While agencies are advised to stay agile and ready to adapt, investments in new tools, including those from Perplexity and TikTok, remain on hold until there is greater market adoption and clarity on success metrics.

Ultimately, as this dynamic environment continues to evolve, many in the field are adopting a "wait and see" approach. The introduction of AI into search advertising holds transformative potential, but widespread acceptance will hinge on resolving uncertainties about performance, cost, and the ability to deliver measurable returns on investment. As the situation unfolds, the balance of power in the search advertising space remains poised for potential disruption.
