Be My Eyes Partners with Microsoft to Enhance AI for Vision Disabilities
Be My Eyes, an innovative accessibility application, is embarking on a new collaboration with tech giant Microsoft to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) aimed at improving accessibility for blind and low-vision individuals. The app, which utilises live video calls to connect sighted volunteers with those in need of visual assistance, is set to provide anonymized video data to Microsoft. This initiative seeks to refine the tech corporation's AI scene understanding capabilities, making it more inclusive for users with vision impairments.
The video data shared by Be My Eyes will feature distinct objects, lighting, and framing scenarios that authentically reflect the experiences encountered by the blind and visually impaired community. The companies have stressed that all personal information has been meticulously removed from the metadata. Furthermore, they assure that the data will be exclusively used for the enhancement of Microsoft's AI models, explicitly excluding any use in advertising or other commercial endeavours.
This collaboration marks Be My Eyes' initial data-sharing partnership intended for AI training. However, the two entities have collaborated previously. Notably, Be My Eyes integrated its Be My AI tool with Microsoft's Disability Answer Desk. Be My AI leverages the power of GPT-4, a sophisticated AI model, to assist users with vision disabilities in navigating Microsoft’s suite of products such as Office, Windows, and Xbox, providing enhanced accessibility support.
In addition to the collaboration with Microsoft, Be My Eyes recently finalised a partnership with Hilton. This agreement, announced earlier this month, involves designated hotel staff assisting blind and low-vision guests with tasks like adjusting thermostats, preparing coffee, and managing window blinds. This initiative builds upon a previous partnership in 2023 between the two companies, which was pivotal in advancing the Be My AI model.
The strategic alliances underscore a growing commitment to leveraging technology to improve the lives of those with vision impairments, aiming to create a more inclusive digital and physical environment through innovative solutions and supportive collaborations.
