CFOs Discuss AI Integration at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit

During the recent Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit held in Dana Point, California, finance chiefs from leading companies gathered to discuss how they are navigating the fast-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). The summit took place on Tuesday, where CFOs elaborated on AI's role in shaping business strategies and practices.

Elena Gomez, the CFO of Toast, a company specializing in cloud-based restaurant management software, shared insights about her focus on AI over the past six months. Gomez pointed out that AI might significantly reshape organisational structures in the near future. Reflecting on a recent conversation at a CFO dinner, she mentioned how some executives predict that company growth over the next three years could occur with only 80% of the current workforce, emphasising the potential impact on capital allocation and organisational roles. According to Gomez, Toast intends to balance AI investment to enhance customer experiences and identify suitable internal applications.

Maria Ferraro, who holds the dual role of CFO and chief inclusion and diversity officer at Siemens Energy, highlighted the transformative journey of CFO roles influenced by digitalisation and AI. Ferraro referenced a McKinsey report indicating nearly all CFOs recognise AI's potential value, with most investing in digitisation. However, she noted that a minimal proportion of processes were fully automated within the past year. Ferraro underscored the importance of strategic allocation of financial resources in AI, describing the transition as a "culture shift and a learning journey." At Siemens, this involves aligning various business functions towards common AI objectives while addressing legacy systems and upskilling staff.

From the technology-driven grocery delivery company, Instacart, CFO Emily Reuter addressed how her organisation sees itself as fundamentally technological. Reuter mentioned that AI integration into Instacart’s offerings aims to align with future e-commerce trends, facilitating growth and efficiency. Instacart is adopting a cautious yet proactive approach to understanding and implementing AI, leveraging it to drive business innovations.

Mandy Fields, CFO of cosmetics company e.l.f. Beauty, illustrated AI's role as a collaborative tool within the organisation. Fields emphasized that AI supports and enhances human-led initiatives, such as using AI-driven social media bots for content production. She also spoke about involving executives from diverse departments in financial literacy sessions to foster an inclusive understanding of financial matters across the organisation.

In addition to discussing AI, the summit also brought attention to recent shifts in CFO appointments and their implications. Mark Hirschhorn has been appointed the new CFO at Amwell, effective from 21 October. With over 30 years of experience, including leadership roles at Teladoc Health and TapestryHealth, Hirschhorn succeeds Robert Shepardson. Similarly, William L. Phelan now takes on the CFO role at Luna Innovations, succeeding John Roiko. These changes highlight the critical role of CFOs in steering companies through economic complexities and technological transitions.

The summit underscored AI's pivotal role in shaping business operations and strategies. As companies continue to adapt to technological advancements, CFOs are pivotal in guiding investments, fostering innovation, and ensuring alignment with broader organisational goals. As highlighted by the gathering, the evolving landscape demands a nuanced approach to leveraging AI effectively across industries.
