Elias Torres, a tech entrepreneur who began his journey from Nicaragua to the United States at the age of 17, has once again made waves in the tech industry. After initially gaining recognition as Vice President of Engineering at HubSpot and later co-founding Drift—a company acquired by Vista Equity for approximately $1.2 billion in 2021—Torres is setting the stage for his latest venture: Agency.
Agency, an artificial intelligence-powered startup, is designed to revolutionise the role of customer success managers (CSMs). Officially emerging from stealth mode on Wednesday, the startup has announced it has successfully raised a $12 million seed funding round. The investment was led by notable venture capital firms Sequoia and HubSpot Ventures.
The inception of this innovative idea traces back to when Torres began his collaboration with OpenAI in early 2023. At the time, Torres was consulting on AI solutions for OpenAI’s enterprise clients, which included prominent organisations like the NBA and Live Nation. It was during this period that the potential for AI-driven customer success management came to light.
Inspired, Torres sought counsel from Brian Halligan, co-founder and executive chairman of HubSpot. Halligan's enthusiasm about the project led him to join the board of the budding startup. "We worked together on the CRM at HubSpot, and he told me, ‘Let’s build something great together again,’” Torres recounted.
Following this pivotal conversation, Torres reached out to Pat Grady, a partner at Sequoia who had previously invested in Drift. Grady was immediately drawn to the concept. “It’s hard to hire great CSMs. It’s hard to scale great CSMs,” Grady remarked. “If you have a product that can do a lot of the work on their behalf, and you can scale your company without having to hire an army of CSMs. That’s pretty useful.”
The primary function of Agency's software is to automate a variety of tasks traditionally managed by CSMs. These tasks include scheduling, follow-ups, note-taking, customer onboarding, and meeting preparation. The platform's AI is capable of understanding customer needs by analysing emails, CRM data, chat messages, and phone conversations, thereby anticipating and addressing customer requirements more efficiently.
Torres shared that achieving this level of personalised customer interaction has been a long-standing dream. "We didn't have the technology to do this until now," he stated, referencing the challenges he faced while working on Salesforce at HubSpot and Drift.
Currently, Agency's product is in the testing phase with select companies, including HeyGen. The software is being offered in an invite-only beta program, targeting customer success professionals who will pioneer its use.
While the concept of AI-powered customer success management is relatively new, and seemingly without immediate direct competitors, the sales and marketing sector is already witnessing significant changes due to AI innovations.
“I don’t know anybody else going after this market,” Grady mentioned. “Hopefully people won’t discover that for a while, and they’ll have a little bit of room to run.”
Elias Torres, with his latest venture, continues to expand his impact on the tech landscape, building next-generation solutions that could potentially redefine how businesses approach customer relationships.
