Google has announced the arrival of two new features for its NotebookLM service, enhancing the utility of its Audio Overviews component. These updates are poised to refine user interaction with digital note-taking and audio file generation. The enhancements are part of a broader effort to transition NotebookLM from its experimental status toward a more fully-fledged application.
The first of the new features is the "Customize" button, which allows users to tailor AI-generated audio files more precisely. This button, located alongside the existing "Generate" option, brings up a text box where users can input specific instructions for the AI to follow. This functionality is designed to enable users to refine the AI's focus based on particular sources, topics, or target audiences, thereby making the tool more adaptable to individual needs.
The second feature introduces background listening capabilities, providing users with the option to listen to their generated audio while engaging in other tasks within the NotebookLM app. This enables multitasking, as users can continue their digital note-keeping activities without interruption to their audio experience.
In addition to these updates, Google has initiated a pilot programme for NotebookLM for Business. This initiative invites interested parties to apply for early access, which includes exposure to new product features, specialised training, and dedicated email support. Aimed primarily at business users, the enterprise version of NotebookLM is focused on enhancing sales processes and product management through tools like product roadmaps, feature specifications, and marketing development resources.
First introduced in mid-September, Audio Overviews in NotebookLM transforms user notes and research into AI-read audio files, akin to a personalised radio talk show. The feature employs two AI presenters to summarise material and draw connections between different subjects. Users can further enrich these Audio Overviews by adding follow-up questions. However, Google advises caution, as the AI system, operating on the enhanced Gemini 1.5 model, may occasionally generate inaccurate information, known as "hallucinations."
While these updates are significant, they represent only the latest in a series of improvements aimed at enhancing user experience. The Gemini 1.5 model reportedly delivers a performance improvement of approximately 87% over the previous version, enhancing the relevance and utility of information provided by the AI in NotebookLM.
As Google continues to develop NotebookLM, it is evident that the company is investing in the versatility and functionality of AI-driven tools, offering new ways for users to manage and interpret information digitally.
