Intel has unveiled a significant update to its AI Playground application, aimed at showcasing the enhanced capabilities available through its latest Intel Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) series processors. This update, revealed in October 2024, enhances the app's ability to run AI tasks locally on computers equipped with Intel's latest technology.
The AI Playground app, freely accessible to users, is engineered to optimise performance on Intel Core Ultra PCs that incorporate Intel Arc GPUs, whether as integrated components or as separate discrete graphics cards with at least 8GB of memory. Included in the update are specific installers for the Intel Core Ultra 200V (version 1.21b) and the Ultra-H series (version 1.01b), alongside support for Intel Arc dGPUs.
The newly-upgraded app aims to cater to users of Windows 11, potentially providing an alternative to Microsoft's Copilot by addressing privacy concerns through complete on-device processing. The AI Playground offers a privacy-conscious solution for those who are sceptical of cloud-based AI models, particularly over concerns about data sharing linked with Copilot's contentious Recall feature.
AI Playground offers three primary modes: Create, Enhance, and Answer. 'Create' mode allows users to generate images from text inputs, utilising models like SD1.5 and SDXL. 'Enhance' mode is suited for those looking to upscale images or perform intricate edits such as inpainting and outpainting. Meanwhile, 'Answer' mode functions as a local chatbot capable of processing documents and responding to user queries, all while maintaining the security of user data by conducting operations entirely on the device itself.
The update further introduces features specifically designed for systems equipped with Ultra 200V processors. These include an exclusive theme and an advanced LLM (Large Language Model) Picker, which is preloaded with various sophisticated models, such as Phi3, Qwen2, and Mistral. Importantly, users with technical expertise can enhance the platform's capabilities by installing their own native PyTorch LLMs, provided they align with Transformer version 4.39.
Additional functionalities in this release include a Conversation Manager, enabling users to save their chat sessions, a font size tool for improved readability, and a preset aspect ratio picker to aid in more streamlined image creation processes.
