Micron Technology, Inc., a leader in the memory and storage industry, has today unveiled a pioneering development in computer memory: the launch of its Crucial DDR5 clocked unbuffered dual inline memory modules (CUDIMM) and clocked small outline dual memory modules (CSODIMM). These modules are now available in volume, marking a significant leap forward in memory technology. Adhering to the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) standards, the new solutions boast speeds up to 6,400 megatransfers per second (MT/s), which more than doubles the performance of the preceding DDR4 technology and offers a 15% increase over existing non-clock-driver-based DDR5 systems.

These innovative modules are designed to enhance speed stability, accelerate download times, and enhance refresh rates, thereby paving the way for a new generation of high-performance PCs. They are the first JEDEC-standard DDR5 CUDIMM and CSODIMM solutions commercially available following the standardization earlier this year.

In a notable development for the industry, Intel has certified Micron’s DDR5 CUDIMM and CSODIMM modules for use up to 64 gigabytes (GB) alongside its Intel Core Ultra processors, which were released on October 10. This collaboration signifies a pivotal moment for the adoption of advanced computing technology.

Dinesh Bahal, the corporate vice president and general manager of Micron’s Commercial Products Group, elaborated on the importance of this advancement: "As AI takes flight, a memory paradigm shift is needed to keep pace with unprecedented system performance requirements. Micron is shipping the industry's first JEDEC-standard, commercially available DDR5 CUDIMM and CSODIMM solutions to power fast, out-of-the-box speeds for AI PCs and high-end workstations."

Overcoming the scaling challenges associated with DDR5, which balance high bandwidth with large capacity, Micron has introduced a novel solution. Developing an integrated clock driver within the memory module itself, as opposed to relying on the CPU clock, Micron has effectively tackled electrical instability, thus enhancing speed and reliability.

With Intel's validation of these memory modules, prominent PC manufacturers and integrators are positioned to integrate this technology into upcoming PC platforms. Micron's memory solutions, utilizing a 32 gigabit die to deliver 64GB CUDIMM and CSODIMM configurations for Intel Core Ultra desktop processors, further enable system capacities of up to 256GB. This capacity is integral for AI PCs and workstations demanding both high memory densities and superior performance.

Dimitrios Ziakas, Intel's vice president of memory and I/O technologies, underscored the strategic importance of this collaboration: "The powerful combination of Intel Core Ultra desktop processors and Micron's latest clock driver-powered CUDIMM/CSODIMMs will be critical to helping propel the next wave of data-rich AI PCs to 6400 MT/s speeds. By aligning our strategies and co-validating, we are offering the most advanced memory and CPU products to our customers and the market."

Crucial's DDR5 CUDIMM and CSODIMM solutions, offering 6,400MT/s speeds, promise immediate performance enhancements for AI PCs and demanding workloads, whether users are transitioning from DDR4 systems or optimizing current DDR5 capabilities. CUDIMMs are geared for desktop use, while CSODIMMs are intended for laptops.

Initially available in 16GB capacities via Crucial.com, these memory modules will be accompanied by a limited lifetime warranty. The larger 64GB models are projected to be accessible through distribution channels by the first six months of 2025.

In making these advancements, Micron is expanding its memory innovation portfolio, focusing on next-gen PC needs, including for AI applications and other demanding environments.
