In an ambitious bid to secure Pennsylvania's place as a leader in the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence (AI), Governor Josh Shapiro joined forces with influential stakeholders at the AI Horizons Summit in Pittsburgh's Bakery Square. This event, held on October 14, marked a significant moment in Pennsylvania's technological evolution, signalling a collaborative effort to transform the state into a hub of innovation and opportunity.
Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian lauded Governor Shapiro for his "laser focus" on leveraging this "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to place Pennsylvania at the forefront of technology and job creation. The summit, designed to promote "human-first" AI innovation, featured the signing of a pivotal memorandum of understanding by Shapiro, Jahanian, University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan Gabel, and NVIDIA Vice President Anthony Robbins. This agreement fosters a formal collaboration between the universities, the Pennsylvania government, and NVIDIA, a leading global tech firm whose chips play a central role in AI data centres.
Dubbed the "NVIDIA AI Tech Community," the partnership will establish two key research centres: one at Carnegie Mellon University focused on robotics, autonomy, and AI, and another at the University of Pittsburgh dedicated to AI and intelligent systems. Through these centres, NVIDIA intends to accelerate the development and commercialisation of AI technologies, enhancing Pittsburgh's innovation ecosystem in the process.
Governor Shapiro emphasised the importance of this collaboration by declaring, “we’re the centre of the universe,” highlighting his administration's commitment to positioning Pennsylvania at the forefront of technological advancement. He further outlined his plans during an interview with NEXTpittsburgh, detailing efforts to engage the state Department of Education and the Department of Community and Economic Development to ensure that technology is effectively deployed and accessible to those in need. Part of these efforts includes obtaining $1.16 billion in federal funding to expand affordable, high-speed internet access throughout Pennsylvania.
The summit drew over 400 participants, comprising industry leaders from AI titans such as NVIDIA and Google, government officials, and investors nationwide. Breakout sessions delved into the use of AI across varied sectors like nonprofit work, energy, education, city governance, national security, and financial services. University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan Gabel underscored the adaptable nature of AI, stating, “As we design AI in our medical education, we’re also making it scalable so that we can create flexible learning opportunities across the globe.”
The event also spotlighted local enterprises successfully integrating AI, including BNY Mellon, Highmark, and Duolingo. Duolingo, known for its AI-driven language learning app, boasts significant market success with a capitalisation of $12.6 billion and a workforce surpassing 700. Governor Shapiro noted the profound impact of AI on various trades and industries within Pennsylvania, illustrating this with the increasing reliance on AI technologies by steamfitters and other tradespeople.
Despite the optimism surrounding AI's potential, there are acknowledged challenges and scepticism. Sree Gadde, managing partner at BlueTree VC, a venture capital firm focusing on AI investments, remarked on the "hype" surrounding AI and the moral considerations it evokes, especially in a place like Pittsburgh renowned for its blend of academic prowess and a Midwest ethical sensibility.
As the summit concluded, the discussions and agreements underscored an awareness of the resource constraints that can accompany vast opportunities. Jerad Bachar, CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, pointed out the necessity of enhancing resources to bolster Pittsburgh's brand as a tech leader.
This landmark collaboration at the AI Horizons Summit demonstrates a concerted effort to marry technological advancement with education and ethical consideration, placing Pennsylvania and its institutions at the leading edge of AI development.
