Retail fraud is increasingly becoming a significant concern for both consumers and businesses, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more entrenched in the industry. Recent research indicates that consumer anxiety regarding identity theft and fraud has surged to 87% in recent findings, marking a notable increase from 63% in 2023. This surge in consumer concern is prompting retailers to prioritise security and privacy alongside convenience in their customer interactions.

To address these concerns, retailers are exploring the potential of AI technology. Despite initial apprehensions surrounding AI, many major ecommerce retailers have begun embracing AI and machine learning as tools to combat fraud. These technologies are deployed to scrutinise vast amounts of transaction data to identify unusual patterns that could indicate fraudulent activity, a task that would be nearly impossible for humans to perform at the same scale and speed.

Traditional passwords, long a staple in digital security, are increasingly regarded as inadequate. With 89% of consumers expressing frustration over managing passwords, and 54% abandoning online services due to login difficulties, retailers are looking to passwordless authentication as a viable solution. This method uses biometric data—such as facial recognition, fingerprints, or selfie verification—to authenticate users, reducing reliance on error-prone password systems and thereby improving security and user experience.

Another strategy gaining traction involves decentralised identity systems. These systems eliminate the need to share unnecessary personal information, such as driver’s licenses with detailed data, by providing digital credentials stored in a digital wallet. This approach not only satisfies consumer demands for greater control over their personal information but also simplifies the verification process for organisations. Though still in nascent stages, several organisations, including key government departments in the U.S., have reported success with digital ID systems.

Statistics indicate that fraud attempts have grown significantly, with a 92% increase in attempted fraud transactions and a 146% rise in the amounts involved year-over-year. In light of these numbers, the adoption of AI and digital identity solutions is seen as essential to combatting the escalating sophistication of fraudsters. Retailers are being urged to overcome their apprehensions about AI to harness its potential to protect against fraud effectively.

Darryl Jones, a seasoned technology executive with extensive experience in driving innovative software solutions, underscores the importance of integrating these technologies. As VP of Consumer Strategy at Ping Identity, Jones advocates for leveraging AI and cutting-edge identity management solutions as a strategic defence against fraud, emphasising the dual benefits of enhancing user experiences while maintaining competitive advantages in the market.

As retailers navigate the challenging landscape of digital security, the adoption and advancement of AI and digital identity systems will likely play a critical role in their strategies to safeguard consumer trust and remain competitive amidst rising fraud concerns.
